Can You Swim in a Crochet Bathing Suit?
You can definitely still swim in the sea or pool with a crochet bathing suit!
Crochet swimsuits might not be the most practical option for a competitive swimmer practicing breaststrokes, but they are perfect for making a statement fashion-wise. Swimming in a crochet swimsuit (while preserving modesty) all depends on the tightness of your stitches, the structure of your pattern, and the material of the yarn you’re using.
What Type of Yarn is Best for a Swimsuit?
When it comes to the type of yarn you should use for your swimsuit, if you want it to be able to get wet, you’ll want a light weight yarn (worsted at the heaviest) that is water resistant, soft, and will dry quickly.
Synthetic and acrylic are great options as they don’t hold a lot of water and dry quickly. This makes them perfect for holding up against the wear and tear brought about by both sand and surf. Bamboo and silk blends are also great options and hold up well strength-wise.
If you can find a yarn with elastic or spandex built in, that’s a great option because it will help the suit to hold its shape, even when wet. Cascade Fixation Splash and Alize Diva Stretch are two yarns that include elastic in the fiber, making them a great choice for swimwear.
Cotton yarns soak up a lot of water, which will cause the project to stretch. Garments made with cotton might not hold up well as swimwear but they’ll still look great for looking hot on the beach! Lily Sugar ‘n Cream, for instance, is inexpensive, hard wearing, and comes in lots of colors for the perfect bikini top to wear to a festival, picnic, or while lounging on the beach.
Materials You’ll Need to Crochet a Swimsuit
As with most crochet projects, you don’t need a lot of materials to complete a swimsuit crochet pattern. Once you’ve picked out the yarn you want to use, you’ll need a crochet hook in the size called for in the pattern.
It’s likely the pattern will suggest a hook size smaller than you might usually use with that weight of yarn, because tighter stitches will provide better coverage.
In addition to your yarn and hook, you’ll also need:
