Conversation Heart Pattern Sweatshirt with Stylish Elbow Patches

Two years ago I made a pair of leggings covered in conversation hearts and had so much fun with them that I decided to create a matching sweatshirt version. Lately I’ve been living in cozy sweatshirts, and this easy DIY conversation heart sweatshirt is a quick, budget-friendly way to celebrate Valentine’s Day—each one costs about $15 to make.

Total Time: 30–45 minutes

Supplies

Sweatshirts (plain crewnecks or pullovers—choose the color you like)
Printable conversation heart templates (use the version required by your iron-on paper—some papers need mirrored images)
Iron-on transfer paper (choose one compatible with fabric)
Iron
Scissors
Sewing or safety pins (optional, for marking elbow patches)

Directions

1. Print and cut your conversation heart designs following the instructions for your iron-on transfer paper. Important: transfer papers vary—some require printing images as-is while others require mirrored images. Check your transfer paper’s directions and print the correct version.
2. If you want elbow patches, try on the sweatshirt and mark each elbow location with a pin. Remove the sweatshirt and arrange the hearts you want to use over those marked spots. For a full-pattern sweatshirt, place hearts evenly across the front, back and sleeves as you prefer.
3. Iron the hearts onto the sweatshirt following the transfer paper’s package instructions. Do not use steam unless the instructions explicitly allow it. Press firmly and evenly, and allow the patches to cool before removing the backing. That’s it—your custom sweatshirt is ready!

This project makes a great last-minute Galentine’s craft night idea. Have each guest bring a sweatshirt or tee and print multiple heart templates—then all you need are a few irons and a comfortable table to work on. The process is clean and low-mess, so it’s ideal for group crafting.

If you’re preparing for Valentine’s Day, now is a good time to order any party supplies you need so they arrive on time. Small DIY projects like this pair well with themed decorations and easy treats to round out a festive gathering.
