DIY Easter Egg Hunt Cake Recipe for a Festive Spring Dessert

One of my favorite cake topper DIYs was a clover patch for St. Patrick’s Day, so I adapted that idea for Easter and created a tiny egg hunt right on top of a cake. It’s a playful, simple topper that looks delightful and takes just a few basic supplies—cardstock and toothpicks are really all you need. This easy project is fast enough that even the Easter bunny would approve.

Supplies you’ll need:
Cardstock in assorted colors
Toothpicks
Hot glue gun or another adhesive (double-sided tape can work)
Optional: a small egg or balloon-shaped punch for quick, uniform shapes (I used a balloon-shaped punch and trimmed the tail to form eggs)

Step 1: Cut your shapes. Cut out egg shapes from cardstock or use a punch to make several eggs. For a 9″ cake I made about ten eggs—adjust the number to suit your cake size. If you used a balloon punch, trim the little tail to create a smooth egg silhouette.

Step 2: Attach toothpicks. Use a small dot of hot glue to secure a toothpick to the back center of each egg. Let the glue set before handling so the pieces stay straight when inserted into the cake.

Step 3: Make the grass. Freehand small grass shapes from green cardstock or sketch a template and cut multiples. Attach each grass piece to a toothpick with glue so they stand upright like tufts of grass.

Step 4: Assemble on the cake. Start by inserting the grass pieces around the cake top in an irregular pattern—vary front to back and left to right to create depth. Then tuck the egg-topped toothpicks in between the grass tufts so the eggs look as if they’ve been hidden in the lawn.

That’s all there is to it—super simple and adorable. If you want to take it a step further, add small paper flowers among the grass, a tiny paper bunny, or a little “Egg Hunt” banner across the top for extra flair. These details are optional but make the topper feel more finished and festive.
