This month’s interview features Leslie of Splendid Rags. She travels the world and shares vibrant photos from each destination on Instagram, inviting followers to join her colorful adventures. Leslie has a joyful approach to color and style—her wardrobe rivals a rainbow and is full of playful pieces.
I enjoyed talking with her about the many places she’s taken our clutches—across cities, countries, and continents—how she transitioned from a full-time job to freelance creative work, and, of course, how she dressed in high school. Her look has changed a lot since then. Let’s dive in.

Okay, let’s talk essentials. What must-have items do you always keep in your purse?
My phone, obviously. Chapstick—I rarely need it but I never leave home without it. A million bobby pins: somehow there’s always a handful at the bottom of every bag. Tampons, because better safe than sorry and you might help a friend. Mints to stay fresh. A travel comb—my first job out of college was at a hair salon, so I picked up that habit. I also like to carry an extra necklace as a backup accessory. Finally, my prescription glasses: I’m nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other, so I keep them handy.

You have such a colorful wardrobe. Do you match your purse to your outfit or switch it up?
I used to carry the same purse for months, but in recent years I switch bags almost daily as my collection grew. Sometimes I match, sometimes I don’t. I see my purse as a pop of color, texture, or print—an easy way to add personality to monochrome or color-blocked outfits. It’s the small accessory that gives an outfit an extra punch.

You’re always traveling. How do you use your clutch when you’re on the go?
In so many ways. Each Studio DIY clutch fits my personality and colorful wardrobe perfectly. I use them for everyday life, not just nights out. They’re great for travel—ideal for carrying essentials on a plane and keeping them within reach. I think every Studio DIY clutch I own has traveled to a different country. Last month it came to Banff, Canada with me; next up are Paris and Vietnam, and my clutch will be by my side.

How would you describe your style, and has it influenced your work?
I was influenced by music early on—band tees, worn Converse, and occasionally creepers, plus a studded belt for effect. For proms and formals I dressed very feminine. I’ve always aimed to look different in a good way and to wear what makes me feel confident. That mindset has shaped my career: I worked as a professional stylist for J.Crew for seven years, using my fine art degree, passion for fashion, and love of people. Styling was my job for a long time and it still informs what I do—whether I’m styling a set, outfits, or props.

What do you do now that you’re not working as an in-store stylist?
I create visual content for brands and venues, producing photography and styling that represent a product, place, or brand. No two days are the same, which I love—routine isn’t for me. Being your own boss has ups and downs: some days I feel confident, other days I’m just trying to keep up. Still, the reward of working creatively every day, whether from home or abroad, makes it worth it.

How did you know it was time to transition to freelance? Any advice for others making that jump?
There came a point when juggling a day job and growing Instagram opportunities was no longer possible. Social media inquiries and travel invites were increasing while my passion for the day job faded. Going freelance is scary, but I’ve never been happier. My advice: listen to your heart. Ask what makes you happy and what you’re good at, then think about how to make that a reality. Pursue it intentionally. It doesn’t happen overnight, but asking tough questions and taking small steps forward beats staying still. The road is challenging and sometimes terrifying, but deeply rewarding.

Travel is a big perk of freelancing. What’s your favorite place so far?
There are so many, but if I had to choose one it would be Vietnam. It changed me—the contrast of cities and landscapes, the mix of humble and vibrant energy made a strong impression. I’m going back this month. Iceland is another favorite; its landscapes are simply breathtaking.
What is your dream trip?
I had long dreamed of visiting India and made that trip earlier this year. It wasn’t exactly what I expected for several reasons, but I’m grateful I went and I have no regrets. Now I’m setting my sights on Africa—its history, wildlife, and diverse cultures are calling me. I’d love recommendations from anyone who has spent time there.
