DIY Mini Easter Basket Ideas: Cute Crafts & Gift Tips

Ironically, I’m spending Easter in Las Vegas this year — not the typical spot for the holiday, but I’ve gotten my egg-hunting and pastel-loving craft fix early since I doubt that will be my scene on Easter Sunday. I’m always looking for ways to use leftover party and craft supplies, which is how these little baskets came to be. They’re made from plastic cups and fringe garland, and they’re super simple and adorable. Use them for kids’ mini egg hunts, as place markers at a grown-up brunch, or scale the idea up with gardening pails for larger baskets.

Ready to make them? Here’s what you’ll need and how to do it.

Supplies:

  • Plastic cups — I used 9 oz cocktail cups from a party store. Shorter cups create a more basket-like shape.
  • Fringe garland — available at party stores or online in pastel colors.
  • Double-stick tape — or a stronger glue if you plan to hold heavier items.

Instructions:

1. Cut a length of fringe garland for the handle.

2. Place double-stick tape on the smooth side of each end of the handle and attach them to opposite sides of the cup. If you’ll be carrying heavier items, use craft glue or a hot glue gun for a stronger bond.

3. Wrap a strip of garland around the cup to measure the circumference, then cut. Add double-stick tape to each end and one piece in the middle of the strip for secure attachment.

4. Starting just under the rim, adhere the garland strip to the cup, overlapping the area where the handle attaches to hide the attachment. Smooth the strip so it follows the curve of the cup.

5. Repeat wrapping strips of fringe around the cup until it’s fully covered. Because the cup tapers, each successive strip will be slightly shorter. Tuck or pull fringe pieces aside as you work; a few strands sticking is fine and adds texture.

6. Fluff the fringe to give the basket a full look. Fill with jelly beans, mini chocolate eggs, or Easter grass — you can shred tissue paper in a paper shredder for an easy DIY grass alternative.

Easter is such a pretty holiday with its soft pastels, and these tiny baskets capture that charm. They’re quick to make, budget-friendly, and perfect for kids to carry around (or for adults to use as whimsical table accents). If I had one as a child, I’d have treated it like a little purse and kept it long after the Easter bunny visited.
