Valentine’s Balloon Surprise Box DIY: Romantic Gift Tutorial

A box with balloons

We’re revisiting one of my earliest DIY projects: the balloon surprise box. First shared years ago, it remains one of our most-loved posts—used for birthdays, gender reveals, proposals and more. This season I gave it a Valentine’s Day twist, because a heart-filled surprise box is just too delightful to pass up.

A Valentine balloon surprise box makes a playful, unforgettable gift for a partner, close friend, or anyone who enjoys a silly reveal. When the recipient opens the box, balloons float up (safely tied so they don’t drift away), creating an instant moment of joy. Best of all, it’s quick and easy to put together.

Supplies Needed

  • Conversation heart balloons (store-bought or homemade)
  • Large cardboard box (about 22 x 22 x 22 inches or larger to fit multiple balloons)
  • Ribbon to tie the balloons
  • Helium (available at party stores, some grocery stores, or from a portable tank)
  • Strong shipping tape
  • Wrapping paper to cover the box (optional), letter stickers and printable conversation-heart cutouts for decorating (optional)

Step-by-Step Tutorial

  1. Assemble the box. If you want a clean look, wrap it in white or decorative wrapping paper first.
  2. Decorate the exterior. I used red letter stickers to echo a conversation-heart motif and taped a few printable hearts to the sides.
  3. Inflate each balloon with helium and tie the end with ribbon.
  4. Gather the tied balloons and secure the ribbons to the bottom of the box with several strips of strong tape so they stay anchored. Leave enough ribbon length so the balloons can rise out of the open box.
  5. Optionally add small treats or a handwritten note inside the box for the recipient to discover.
  6. Carefully place the balloons into the box and close the top. Add a small piece of tape to keep it shut while delivering.
  7. Deliver the box to a doorstep, an office, or any special spot, then wait for the delighted reaction when it’s opened.

I still think this idea is one of the best gifts ever: simple to make and unforgettable to receive. Jeff, if you’re reading—take note! 😉
