My First Mother’s Day: Celebration Tips + 2 Outfit Ideas for You

It’s surreal to be just days away from my first Mother’s Day as a mom. I still remember last year’s Mother’s Day like it was yesterday — what a difference a year makes. Now I have a tiny, almost two-month-old to celebrate with, and that changes everything.

For my first Mother’s Day, I’d happily spend the day just staring at Arlo. Instead, we’re doubling up on celebrations: a family brunch with Jeff’s parents and a cozy picnic later in the week that Jeff is planning just for us. Both plans are simple — lots of bread and plenty of baby snuggles, just how I like it.

If you have similar plans, here are two effortless outfit ideas that are comfortable, photogenic, and perfect for celebrating.

Mother’s Day Outfit for Brunch

For brunch I’m wearing my favorite “Mama Bird” shirt, easy wide-leg pants, and a pop of color with comfortable heels. It’s a casual but put-together look that works well for family photos and lingering over a long meal.

Mother’s Day Outfit for a Picnic

For the picnic I’ll wear a comfortable jumpsuit layered over a soft t-shirt. T-shirts have been my go-to lately — easy to wash, cozy for cuddles, and simple to style with layers or accessories to feel a bit more dressed up.

I’m almost eight weeks into motherhood, and every time someone calls me “mom” or “mama” I still glance around, half-expecting someone else to be the recipient of that name. It’s a title I waited and hoped for, and now that it’s real, it sometimes feels unbelievable. I don’t take a second of it for granted. Here are some of my favorite moments so far:

The first snuggle when I pick him up from his bassinet. His sleepy smile as he drifts off. How he holds my pinkie while nursing. Counting legs and spots on the bugs from his favorite book in English, Spanish, and French. His morning giggles. Coordinating outfits. When music instantly soothes him. Seeing little versions of Arlo in mirrors. Watching Jeff become a dad. The tiny thigh rolls that I secretly adore. Introducing him to friends and family. Finding tiny socks hiding in the laundry. Watching his arms shoot up when we unswaddle him — that stretch gets me every time.
