Each year we make a trip to Disneyland to enjoy Halloween Time, and it’s one of my favorite seasons to visit. This year I wanted matching mommy-and-me Disney outfits for my little guy and me, so I decided to create Halloween-themed denim pieces decorated with Disney patches.
I spent time browsing Etsy and eBay for spooky Disney patches and ended up making a patched pair of jeans for myself and a patched jean jacket for my son. The process was simple, the results are unique, and the pieces will be keepsakes we can wear for years. Patches also make a thoughtful gift for Disney fans.

How to Attach Patches to Denim
There are three reliable methods to attach patches to denim jackets or jeans: iron-on, machine sewing, and hand sewing. Choose the method that best fits the patch type and the placement on your garment.
Iron-on
Iron-on patches are the fastest option. If your patch has an adhesive backing it likely includes instructions, but here’s a general approach:
- Heat your iron to the highest safe setting for denim.
- Position the patch where you want it. Place a thin cloth, like a tea towel, over the patch to protect it.
- Press the iron down on the cloth over the patch for 40–60 seconds.
- Turn the garment over and iron the backside of the patch for another 30–40 seconds.
- If edges lift, repeat the process until the patch sits flat.
Note: the adhesive for iron-on patches can weaken over time, so check attachment before wearing and consider reinforcing with stitching if needed.
Machine sewing
Sewing patches with a machine is the most secure method and works well for jackets. For pants, especially skinny jeans, it can be harder to navigate the machine around the leg. Use thread that matches the patch background and stitch close to the patch’s outer edge.
Hand sewing
Hand sewing is another secure option and is often easier for patches placed on pant legs. Use a matching thread and a backstitch along the outer stitch line of the patch for a neat, durable finish.

What Denim Pieces Should I Use?
For this project I used a child’s jean jacket and an older pair of jeans. A light- to medium-wash denim works well because it helps the colorful patches stand out.
Since this is a seasonal project, consider sourcing pieces from thrift stores, Buy Nothing groups, Poshmark, or other secondhand shops. Patches are great for covering stains, too, so older denim can be repurposed easily.
If you’re making something for a child, think about sizing up one or two sizes to extend how long they can wear it. I bought my son’s jacket two sizes larger and rolled the cuffs so he’ll be able to wear it for multiple seasons.
