I’m knee-deep in glitter over here! I don’t use glitter year-round, so when the holidays arrive I go all out. Here’s the first of several sparkly projects: DIY glitter party hats for the holidays. I was sent a box of Mod Podge products to try, and since it’s the best adhesive for glitter, I put it to work. These hats are simple to make and the glitter stays put. If you spill glitter on the floor, that one’s on you.

Supplies:
Paper mache cone (available at craft stores)
Mod Podge in the finish you prefer
Paintbrush
Fine glitter (I like very fine glitter such as craft-brand options)
Tinsel garland
Headband or ribbon/elastic
Hot glue gun
Instructions:
Begin by brushing an even coat of Mod Podge over the paper mache cone. Work fairly quickly so the glue stays wet and tacky.

Immediately sprinkle the glitter over the wet Mod Podge, covering the cone completely. Tap or shake off the excess. It helps to work over wax paper so you can funnel leftover glitter back into its container. Allow the glittered cone to dry fully.

Once the first layer is dry, seal the glitter with another coat of Mod Podge. Brush the sealer gently and evenly over the glittered surface and let it dry completely — the finish will dry clear and prevent loose glitter.

Tinsel trim: If you aren’t attaching the cone to a headband, cut a length of tinsel to match the hat’s circumference. Use hot glue to adhere the tinsel around the base of the hat, then glue a small bundle of tinsel to the hat’s tip for a festive pom.

If you choose a headband, attach the cone with two small dots of hot glue along the cone’s edge and press the band in place until the glue sets. To neatly finish the inside, glue a circle of cardstock to the cone’s opening, sandwich the headband between that and another cardstock circle, and glue in place.
If you prefer ribbon or elastic, poke two small holes near the base of the cone with an awl and thread the ribbon or elastic through. Tie knots on the inside to secure, and cover the knots with tinsel trim if desired.

Wear your finished hat and get festive! These glittered cones make an easy, cheerful accessory for holiday gatherings and New Year’s celebrations.
