Some time ago I made a watermelon-inspired floppy hat as a test project, and for one reason or another I never shared it — I may even have sold it at a studio sale. Recently, while brainstorming fun floppy-hat DIYs, we revisited the idea, recreated the design, and now it’s finally here.

DIY Watermelon Floppy Hat
Total Time: 1 1/2 Hours Active (plus drying time)
Supplies
Floppy hat
Fabric-safe craft paint in pink, black, mint and kelly green (I used Martha Stewart brand)
Paint brushes
Directions
1. If your hat has any trim or ribbon, remove it first. Paint the inner half of the brim — from the base of the crown to halfway to the brim edge — with pink paint. Allow it to dry.
2. Along the outer edge of the pink, paint a thin mint stripe to mimic the watermelon flesh-to-rind transition. Let it dry.
3. Paint the remaining outer portion of the brim kelly green to create the rind. Allow to dry thoroughly.
4. Once the paint is dry, add black teardrop-shaped seeds along the pink section. Let everything dry completely and your watermelon hat is ready to wear.

My skirt is from here!
I always find myself imagining a whole collection of fruit-themed hats — watermelon, citrus slices, kiwi — it would be so much fun to create a fruit salad of floppy hats. If you try other fruit designs, share your photos!
