Welcome to our Palm Springs kitchen — a warm, inviting, moody yellow space I’m proud to share. This kitchen evolved dramatically from where it started, and the transformation is one of my favorite projects in the house.

Renovating this kitchen was the most important change in the home. Opening it up turned the house into a true vacation retreat — a place to relax, entertain, and spend easy time with family and friends.

I also wanted the kitchen to feel rooted in history and character to match the rest of the home. The goal was an aged, lived-in look — and hearing visitors say “Wow this feels so… old” in the best way has been the biggest compliment.

Creating an Open Layout

When we bought the house, the kitchen was closed off from the living room. While the walls provided extra storage, they also created a divided, less social plan.

For a vacation home, we wanted to cook while enjoying guests and have a clear view to the backyard. The first move was removing that dividing wall to create flow and light.

Opening the space allowed us to add a peninsula for casual dining and entertaining. We also removed upper cabinets to lighten the kitchen and create a more open, airy feel.

Since this is not a full-time residence, lower cabinets provide ample storage. Removing the heavy upper cabinets made room for open shelving and a pot rail, which let us introduce character while keeping everyday items accessible.

The Perfect Yellow Kitchen Tone
I’ve long wanted a yellow kitchen. After previous attempts, we finally landed on a shade that feels warm and moody without tipping into overly bright or pastel territory.
The paint is Wildflower Honey by Dunn Edwards — warm and balanced, not too saturated, with enough depth to feel rich and slightly moody rather than flat or candy-colored.

Yellow is a challenging color because it shifts with light throughout the day. I tested swatches on multiple walls and observed them at different times to ensure the tone worked with the home’s light and finishes.
We refreshed the existing lower cabinets with a durable deep cream called Finest Silk by Dunn Edwards and paired them with second-hand hardware for an authentic, slightly worn feel.

Wildflower Honey proved to be the right color — it reads beautifully in many lights and serves as a warm backdrop for bolder accent pieces, like our Sunrise Yellow Samsung Bespoke refrigerator, which complements the palette and adds personality.

Open Storage & Brass Pot Rails in Kitchens
We’ve loved open storage in past kitchens and kept that idea here. Open shelves let you store everyday items and showcase cherished objects you don’t always use but want to enjoy visually.

On the back wall we installed a long shelf. To stay within budget, we used a painted 2″ x 8′ plank and concealed brackets behind decor. Below it, a brass pot rail adds age and character while keeping utensils and towels handy.

Hand Painted Candles
Two less-common choices helped warm the space: artwork and a table lamp on the shelf. These elements make the kitchen feel cozy and collected, especially in the evenings when the lamp provides a soft, inviting glow.

Adding art to kitchen shelving brings life to what can otherwise be purely functional space. The lamp creates a cozy ambiance that feels intentionally layered.

Adding a Kitchen Peninsula
Removing the wall between the kitchen and living room created space for a long peninsula — a decision that transformed how we use the area and is the renovation I’m happiest with.

The peninsula seats five, enabling conversation between the cook, guests, and anyone relaxing on the couch. It encourages communal cooking and relaxed entertaining.

Wood Stools | Blue Tile | Wicker Pendant Lights
We clad the peninsula in blue Mexican tile to add bold pattern and contrast against simple wood stools. For counters, we chose butcher block stained to resemble walnut for a warm, budget-friendly surface sealed with Waterlox for durability.

Open Weave Baskets
Above the peninsula we installed two dark wicker pendant lights that draw the eye up to the dramatic wood ceilings and help balance the room’s height and warmth.

How To Make A Decorative Plate Wall
A decorative plate wall is a versatile, easy statement for the kitchen. It allows you to display special dishes and change the arrangement over time as your collection grows or your style shifts.

I used several types of plate hangers. For most plates and bowls, brass plate hangers that accommodate 5 1/2″ to 14″ work well. For bowls, measure across the back from rim to rim to choose the correct size.
- 5 1/2″–8″ plate hangers for smaller plates
- 8″–11″ hangers for medium plates
- 11″–14″ hangers for larger plates
To hang, stretch the hanger around the back and hook the covered ends on the rim. Then hang on the included hook. For very large or heavy pieces, I used a Display Buddie, which tightens around the item and supports larger diameters and weights.

Display Buddies are pricier but necessary for oversized bowls; they include clear instructions and offer a secure solution for plates up to 24″ and heavier pieces.

An 18th-century Scandinavian yellow chest from an architectural salvage store anchors our plate wall and provides storage for linens and specialty dishes. A statement piece like this bridges kitchen and dining areas beautifully.

This kitchen was designed to feel like it’s always been here — warm, collected, and ready for gatherings — and that sense of history is exactly what we achieved.
