Today’s DIY combines two of my past projects into an extra-cute Valentine’s idea: a mailed piñata love-gram. Last year I made mini conversation heart piñatas and later experimented with mailing a piñata-gram. This time I married the two concepts to create a piñata you can fill, address, and send without a box. Imagine receiving a tiny heart piñata in the mail—what a delightful surprise!

Supplies:
- Paper mâché or cardboard heart box (available at craft stores)
- Heavy crepe paper (more durable for mailing than thin crepe)
- Scissors or fringe scissors
- Adhesive label paper
- Pen
- White craft or school glue
- Treats or small goodies for stuffing
Step 1 — Prepare the mailing label: Trace the bottom of the heart box onto the back of an adhesive label and cut it out. Write the recipient’s address and your return address on the label, then stick it firmly to the bottom of the box. Fill the box with your chosen treats.

Step 2 — Fringe the crepe paper: Cut 1″ wide strips from the crepe paper roll. Along one edge of each strip, cut a thin fringe. Starting at the point of the heart lid, apply lines of white glue and attach the fringe strips, overlapping slightly and spacing them about 1/4″–1/2″ apart as you work upward toward the top. Let the fringe hang over the edges while it dries.

Step 3 — Trim and finish the front: After the glue dries, trim the excess fringe so the heart outline is visible. Then add fringe to the sides of the heart. Fringing the sides not only looks good but also helps hold the lid and base together. Start at the bottom point and work up to the top dip on each side, using the same gluing and overlapping method. Trim any stray fringe so the edges are neat.

Step 4 — Shipping tips: Take the finished heart to the post office and have it mailed as-is; no outer box is required. Some postal workers may question it at first, but it can usually be shipped if the address label is firmly attached and won’t fall off. When you write the address, leave room for the postage label or stamps. Shipping cost depends on the final weight, so the amount you put inside will determine postage.

You don’t have to mail these to enjoy them—delivering them in person works beautifully too. Still, receiving a handmade piece of mail is extra-special, and a piñata love-gram makes a memorable Valentine’s Day surprise.
