DIY Baby Sunglasses and Sun Costume: Simple Costume Ideas

Women and baby dressed up as sun and sunglasses

I’m sunglasses and he is my “SUN” — get it? My son. Inspired by my favorite pair of Oui Fresh sunnies, we made a playful DIY sunglasses costume this year, paired with an adorably simple baby sun outfit.

Curious what we used for the lenses? Frisbees! They worked perfectly. Here’s how you can recreate both looks with easy materials and minimal time.

DIY Sunglasses + Sun Costumes

Total Time: 1 – 1 1/2 Hours

Supplies

For the sunglasses:

Large cardboard sheet or box
Two black frisbees
Scissors
Pencil
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Elastic
Pink vinyl or pink paint
Pink or white dress/outfit

For the sun:

Yellow foam in two shades
Scissors
1″ elastic
Yellow bloomers (or similar bottoms)
Yellow striped t-shirt or tee
Yellow cardigan
Yellow moccasins or soft shoes

Directions

To make the sunglasses:

1. Place the frisbees on the cardboard spaced roughly 10 inches apart and trace around them. This creates the two lens guides.
2. Freehand a large flower shape that connects the two circles and includes a nose bridge. Make the overall piece about four inches wider than the traced circles for a bold look.
3. Cut out the sunglass frame from the cardboard.
4. Cover the frame with pink vinyl or paint it pink and let dry.
5. Center and hot glue the frisbees over the two circular spaces so they sit like lenses.
6. Attach elastic in an “X” shape across the back of the frame with hot glue so the piece can be slipped over your head and shoulders and stay in place.

To make the baby sun:

1. Cut a circle from the deeper yellow foam sized for your child (ours was about 8″).
2. Cut multiple triangles from the lighter yellow foam to form sun rays.
3. Hot glue the triangles to the back of the circle around the edge so they radiate outward and resemble a sun.
4. Hot glue yellow elastic in an “X” shape to the back so the costume slips over the baby’s head or arms and can be secured under a cardigan or jacket if needed.

The sun/son pun still makes me smile. That little guy in the photos is indeed my son — he even chewed on my real sunglasses during the shoot. These sunglasses would also pair nicely with other summer-themed costumes like a palm tree, pool float, or tropical drink for a group costume idea.
