I’ve been saving this DIY for a while after finding gem-shaped ice cube molds and knowing I wanted to make oversized gem rings. Inspired by a gem-decorated mug I received, I finally tried a method that creates striking faux gems using a surprising material: hot glue. These translucent, chunky gems are fun, inexpensive, and surprisingly easy to make. Below is a clear, step-by-step guide for creating your own giant gem rings.

BAM!

Supplies
Gem ice molds
A pan, water, and a freezer
Hot glue and a glue gun
Nail polish (colors of your choice)
Nail art pen (for outlining facets)
Adjustable ring blanks or ring bases
A butter knife

How to make giant gem rings
- Support the silicone mold before pouring glue. Place the mold in a shallow pan and fill it with water up to the flat edge so the mold holds its shape. Freeze until fully solid.
- Heat your glue gun. With the mold still frozen and sitting in the pan on a stable surface, fill each gem cavity with hot glue. Work continuously so the glue flows evenly into all corners and to the top of the mold; stopping can cause uneven surfaces. Depending on the size of the mold and glue sticks, each gem may take about one to two short glue sticks.
- Return the filled mold to the freezer and let the glue cool and harden completely.
- When the glue is set, remove the pan from the freezer. You may need to let the ice release slightly before removing the silicone mold. Use a butter knife carefully around the top edge to loosen the mold from the glue. Gently pop out the hardened gem—it may take a little nudging.
- Paint the finished gem with nail polish to add color. Multiple thin coats work best; allow each coat to dry thoroughly. Do this in a well-ventilated area and follow the polish manufacturer’s safety instructions.
- Use a nail art pen to outline the facet lines on the gem for added definition. The pen helps make the edges and facets pop visually.
- Attach the gem to a ring blank. For a secure hold, apply hot glue to the interior of the ring base and press the gem into place, sealing the sides. For a more durable metal-to-plastic bond, consider using a jewelry or metal-safe adhesive instead of hot glue.

These oversized gem rings are playful and bold. They’re perfect for costume parties, bachelorette events, or just as a whimsical accessory for a regular day. Once you get comfortable with the process, you can experiment with different colors, layering polishes, or adding glitter or metallic accents.
