I’ve shared most of the changes to Arlo’s new “big kid” room elsewhere, but I wanted one place that shows the whole transformation. We updated the nursery into a versatile, cheerful room while keeping the original layout and color palette—partly to save money and partly because I loved the original look. With a few DIY projects and small compromises we created a space that functions as both a comfortable sleep area and a playful, organized room for daily life.
The updates were simple but thoughtful, and the room now serves our family well. Below is a breakdown of what we changed and why.

A Big Kid Sleep Space

Bed found on Facebook Marketplace. Bedding and pillows were chosen to bring in a few new colors and to make the space cozier for both sleep and play.
We chose a daybed so it could sit in the same spot as the former crib—under the rainbow wall hanging—avoiding a major room rearrange. A daybed also offers versatility: it works as a cozy reading spot, a play couch, and can be repurposed later in a playroom or office. Letting Arlo pick some of his own bedding added personality and introduced fresh hues that complement the existing palette.

More Functional Bookshelves
We kept the rainbow bookshelf look but improved storage by DIYing additional IKEA shelves so the shelves hold many more books. The DIY shelves have performed really well and accommodate our quickly growing collection—making books easy to see and reach, which encourages reading and independent selection.

Some of our favorite children’s books are featured elsewhere on the blog for reference.
Functional and Pretty Toy Storage

To prevent toys from taking over the living room, we built low, accessible wooden toy shelves. These Montessori-style shelves let Arlo reach toys easily, play independently, and help with cleanup. Because I DIYed them, the shelves span the full wall, maximizing storage for large or oddly shaped items.

Striped baskets and other storage pieces help keep small parts contained. A custom photo calendar above the shelves doubles as art and a countdown tool for events Arlo looks forward to.
We also preserved the gallery wall to avoid unnecessary patching and because it still fits the room’s aesthetic.

Making a Narrow Closet Functional

The closet was upgraded with an organized shelving system, an adjustable rod, and wall pegs to maximize vertical storage in a narrow space.
When we added the twin bed, a dresser no longer fit, so we converted the closet back into usable storage. Installing an adjustable shelving system and an extendable rod made the most of the narrow footprint. I added a peg rail for hats, backpacks, and baskets holding overflow clothing. These changes made the closet practical without sacrificing style.
There’s still an antique 1930s shoe rack in the closet that’s more decorative than useful, but it adds character.

Overall, the room feels sunny, functional, and kid-friendly. I’m pleased we were able to reuse several items and rely on DIY solutions to stretch the budget while keeping the design intentional and playful.
Room Sources
Wall Paint: Dunn Edwards “White”
Door Paint: Dunn Edwards “Highlighter”
Rug and pendant lighting chosen to complement the color scheme. A floor lamp was found used; other affordable floor lamp options are available if you don’t find a secondhand piece.
Sleep Area
DIY rainbow wall hanging anchors the bed area. The daybed was sourced secondhand; bedding and pillows were selected to bring in color and texture.
Book Area
Pom-pom curtains and expanded rainbow bookshelves create an inviting reading corner. A small white bookcase complements the shelving and holds additional titles.
Play Area
Low wooden toy shelves and striped baskets keep toys organized and accessible. A custom photo calendar above the shelves doubles as art and a fun countdown tool.
Art and Decor
A mix of prints, a plush wall mount, and playful hooks create a layered, eclectic gallery that feels personal and bright without overwhelming the room.
Closet
An adjustable shelving system, extendable rod, and peg rail make a narrow closet efficient for storing clothing, hats, and backpacks.
