Color Palette Inspiration

Use the bright, playful colors of the Monsters, Inc. ride and characters as your guide: vivid greens, blues, and purples for Sulley and Mike, softened with pastel hues inspired by the many doors. This palette lets you mix and match solid-colored plates, cups, and linens you may already own for a cohesive, fun look.

Stack colorful plates and napkins, add mismatched chairs or cushions in complementary shades, and use a few signature props — like foam-core doors — to instantly make the space feel like Monstropolis.

How To Make Monster’s Inc Doors

The colorful doors are an iconic part of Monsters, Inc. and make fantastic party decor. They’re whimsical, eye-catching, and surprisingly easy to craft from foam core. Hang several doors above a dessert table, use them as bunting, or create a backdrop for photos.

Make foam-core doors in three simple steps:

  1. Cut colorful foam core sheets into quarters using an X-Acto knife, cutting through one layer at a time to keep the edges even.
  2. Use a ruler and a black permanent marker to draw door panels, frames, and a doorknob—use your favorite door designs as inspiration.
  3. Tape fishing line to the back of each door and hang them from the ceiling, a string, or a backdrop frame where they’ll add instant character.

Mike Wazowski Cupcakes

Mike Wazowski cupcakes are a playful, kid-friendly treat. Make cake balls, coat them in green candy melts to form Mike’s head, and place each on top of a frosted cupcake for an adorable centerpiece treat.

You’ll need basic supplies: cupcakes, a box cake mix for cake balls, green and white candy melts, edible markers, and soft green candy or fondant for arms and legs.

  • Fondant eye being placed on green cake ball on a cucpake

Steps to assemble Mike cupcakes:

  1. Prepare cake balls from box mix and a bit of frosting, then chill them until firm.
  2. Melt green candy melts and dip each cake ball, covering it completely. Let the coating set slightly but don’t let it harden fully.
  3. Use a white candy melt or fondant for the eye; draw the pupil and details with edible markers and press it onto the cake ball before the coating fully hardens.
  4. Roll soft green candy or fondant into small arms and legs and attach them with a dab of melted candy coating.
  5. Draw a mouth using edible markers or a small amount of decorative icing.
  6. Place each finished Mike cake ball on a frosted cupcake. For a furry Sulley-style frosting on other cupcakes, use a grass piping tip.

Blue-and-purple yarn pom-poms evoke Sulley’s signature look and work great as decor, a craft activity during the party, or as playful slippers and favors for a sleepover-style celebration.

  • Blue and purple yarn wrapped around a Pom Pom maker
  • Blue and purple monster Pom Pom being hot glued to a pink slipper

How to make Sulley-inspired pom-poms:

  1. Use a pom-pom maker for a neat, even shape. Wrap mainly blue yarn and include some purple sections to create Sulley’s spots.
  2. Follow the pom-pom maker’s instructions to finish and trim the pom-pom evenly.
  3. Attach pom-poms to slippers with hot glue for a lasting favor, or tie them to strings for garlands and hanging decor.

Make It A Movie Night!

If your guests are old enough, turn the celebration into a Monsters-themed movie night. Play Monsters, Inc., Monsters University, or episodes of Monsters at Work on a TV or outdoors on a projector. Serve popcorn, themed candies, and cozy drink stations.

Arrange colorful seating with pillows and faux-fur blankets to create a comfy viewing area that echoes the characters’ playful textures and colors.
