Decorating our home for Halloween this year felt extra meaningful since we’re spending so much time at home. When we weren’t admiring other neighbors’ displays, we took the opportunity to refresh our own rooms. I photographed a few areas to share ideas you can adapt for your space.
Aside from a couple of candlesticks, I didn’t buy much new. Most accents were homemade or crafted with the family — which always makes things feel warmer and more personal.

Ideas for Halloween Gallery Walls

A quick, low-cost trick to make a gallery wall festive is to add hats, masks, or other small props to the photos and frames. Use removable adhesive so you can change things without damaging the artwork — suddenly a portrait looks playful with a tiny witch’s hat.
Next to the TV I swapped our usual wall hanging for a homemade garland made by our little one. The googly eyes were an instant favorite and add a fun, whimsical touch.

Decorating a Fireplace or Mantle for Halloween

Filling the fireplace with pumpkins always creates an immediate seasonal focal point. This year my pumpkin collection stayed about the same size — partly because I haven’t been shopping in-store much — but you can achieve the same look by mixing sizes and colors, real or faux.
On the mantle I added a few candlesticks and a cluster of bats cut from cardstock with a craft cutter. I also placed a playful mask on a portrait for an unexpected pop of personality.

Halloween Decor Ideas for the Kitchen

Bats are an easy, dramatic option for kitchen walls and tile. I cut many shapes from cardstock and arranged them in flight — it’s an inexpensive update with big visual impact. They adhere well to tile with removable adhesive; just avoid placing them too close to the sink or stove.
Our refrigerator is an evolving gallery of Arlo’s creations. We also keep a Halloween bucket list visible so we can check off activities as a family.

Quick Swaps to Make Spaces More Festive for Halloween

I keep a storage bin with delicate Halloween pieces so each season I can swap them in for everyday decor. Ceramic pumpkins become bookends, velvet pumpkins work as centerpieces, and handmade crafts can replace bowls or trays. Small faux arrangements add texture and color to shelves and dressers.
These simple swaps let you create a cohesive seasonal theme without overhauling every room.

Halloween Home Decor Ideas for Kids’ Rooms

Swapping in holiday books and themed toys on a rainbow shelf is a quick and kid-friendly update. We love arranging seasonal reads and little props so they’re both decorative and accessible.

Garlands are a favorite of mine for kids’ rooms because they’re lightweight and easy to hang with command hooks. Drape them over wall hangings, shelves, or hang them vertically for a playful effect. Tiny witch hats on stuffed animals add a silly, charming touch kids adore.

Festive Outdoor Halloween Decor

Outside we display many pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns, both real and faux, along with our oversized skeleton. One standout this year was a Halloween Town door inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas — it was simple to build and delighted our household’s biggest fan.
