A Bit About the Designer
Amber crochets some of the cutest stuff on my daily Instagram feed, and her designs were a frequent feature on The Loop Scoop! So I’m super excited to share her work and learn more about her in this Designer Showcase!
Here’s a bit about Amber in her own words:
Hi! I’m Amber Millard, the designer behind Divine Debris. I’ve been designing for almost 10 years but my crochet journey started back when I was just a tiny human. My mother taught me how to crochet, with a Boye 4.00 mm hook and a skein of worsted weight yarn (it was variegated white, purple, and green and I vividly remember it). Like any overly ambitious 7-year-old, I decided to make a blanket. In a not-so-surprising turn of events, that blanket became my very first abandoned WIP. Luckily, it didn’t turn me off to crocheting forever and at about 25, I picked up a crochet hook again.
When I started crocheting again in my 20s I made basically everything I could and it wasn’t long before I started trying to make my own patterns. Through lots of trial and error (and so much frogging!) I started to figure some things out and found that designing really helped to scratch that itch that I, a lifelong art kid, absolutely needed in my life. And back in 2016 I discovered tapestry crochet and my goodness, it was like a light switched on and I knew I found something I really wanted to do.
I like to call it “painting with yarn” because for me it’s a very similar creative process to the drawing and painting I did when I was a teen. I usually sit down and “sketch” many graphs before I settle on one I really like and pull out my yarn. And thanks to social media, I’m seeing so many more people using tapestry, intarsia, and c2c than just a few years ago and they are making some beautiful crochet colorwork. It just makes me so happy for fiber artists.
In addition to crochet, I love to beer explore with my husband (where I often take my yarn with me), read as many books and comics as I can, and watch Bob’s Burgers from start to finish again.
