A Thrifty Way To Use Your Stash Yarn!

We all have that one t-shirt that lives in our dresser that is beloved and the thought of getting rid of it is too sad to bear… so it just stays in its spot in the back of our drawer untouched and unworn. What if we said you could knit new life into it with some stash yarn and your needles?!

On November 18th at 10:30 AM (PST) you can join us on Zoom for Upcycling with Yarn with Afifa Sayeed! Afifa debuted this class last month at our Biggest Little Getaway and it was such a hit we decided to open it up to ALL of our customers! Ahead of this thrifty and free event, we sat down with Afifa to ask her some questions about this class!

How long have you been a knitter and designer?

I learned to knit when I was very, very little but picked it back up about 10 years ago and started designing in 2015!

How did you learn this technique of embellishing clothing with yarn?

I totally made it up! I love upcycling and thought this would make great use of scrap yarn!

What are some of the things you can do with embellishing?

Probably too many to list but, for starters, you can add accents to necklines, sleeves, and hems. And, once you get comfortable with the technique, you can totally change the shape of the item you are embellishing and modify its fit.

Do you have any tips for newbie makers (and embellishers!)?

Make sure to use an item that is made out of a knit/jersey fabric and use smaller needles. Start out on something you don’t mind getting ruined for practice!

What are some ways you unwind (pun intended!) after a long day?

I love to read on my iPad and knit. My ‘guilty’ pleasure is watching the Real Housewives while I knit! Shhh, don’t tell anyone… πŸ˜‰
