Inside Red Heel Sock Monkeys: Pop Culture Icons
I’ve featured crochet sock monkeys here on Moogly before. But I had no idea that I grew up not too far from where the sock monkey story begins, in Rockford Illinois! So when Dee reached out to ask if I would share the word about her book here on Moogly, I (of course) said yes!
“Dee Lindner, the Sock Monkey Lady, is an author, photographer, and artist whose medium is our iconic red heel sock monkeys. She brings life to an American-born craft for all to enjoy in her sock monkey-themed books, greeting cards, and other novelties spanning over thirty-five years. Her books and cards have been popular sell outs. A red heel sock monkey expert, Lindner asserts America is the origin of one of the biggest yarns in the world ever told. This incredible story unfolds in her latest non-fiction book, Red Heel Sock Monkeys: Pop Culture Icons. A yarn yet-unfolding that contains incredible facts, colossal Wall of Fame endeavors, fun photos and heartfelt stories–of international proportions–behind the journey of our iconic sock monkeys.”
Dee is clearly an expert in her field. And this book shows that there is so much more to the sock monkey story than most would imagine. Inside Red Heel Sock Monkeys you’ll find a deep dive into the origin of the socks, the monkeys, and every variation since.
A mix of history, instructions, memories, and memorabilia, she has truly succeeded in her mission to “preserve and share sock monkey lore.” There are pages and pages of photos from the past 100+ years. At nearly 400 pages, it’s hard to imagine there’s more to say on the subject. But if there is, I’m pretty sure Dee will take note and say it!
If you are interested in the whys and wheres, and all things sock monkey, then this is the book for you. But it also has some interesting knitting history – like the invention of the seamless sock knitting machine and the rise of the matching knitting industry! There’s everything from ice sculptures to lawsuits, and so many smiles throughout!
