Christmas Balloon Wreath Tutorial: Step-by-Step DIY Guide

Colorful Christmas decor

I’m totally obsessed with this Christmas balloon wreath. We originally made it as a prop for a holiday balloon photo shoot, but everyone fell in love with it—so I had to share how to make one yourself.

This wreath is a perfect DIY for a holiday party. It’s quick, simple to assemble, and creates a big visual impact. Swap it in for a traditional wreath, hang it temporarily with a removable hook, or display it wherever you want a festive pop. Here’s how to make it.

Total Time: One Hour

Supplies

Green balloons (about 40 total—use a mix of sizes for a full look). A few red, pink or peach balloons for “ornaments” (about a dozen combined).
Balloon air pump (optional but helpful).
24″ wire wreath frame.
Zip ties.
Balloon tape (double-sided balloon adhesive dots or strips).
Poster board or ribbon for a bow (use poster board for a modern, oversized bow).
Fishing line for hanging the bow or securing heavier elements.

Directions

  1. Inflate approximately 40 green balloons. Under-inflate them slightly so they stay round and small—use a variety of sizes to create depth. Inflate about a dozen pink, red, or peach balloons (also under-inflated) to use as accents.
  2. Attach the green balloons to the wire wreath using zip ties. Work around the frame, grouping balloons close together and varying sizes as you go until the wreath is fully covered.
  3. After the base is filled with green balloons, add the pink, red, and additional green balloons as “ornaments.” Use balloon tape to secure these accents in place. Place each accent balloon where you want it before taping, since the tape can be difficult to reposition without popping balloons.
  4. Step back and adjust: move, add, or remove balloons until the wreath looks balanced and full.
  5. Create a large bow: enlarge a bow template to 200% if using poster board, cut it out, and thread fishing line through the back loop to attach it to the wreath. A ribbon bow can simply be tied or taped on if it’s lightweight.
  6. Hang the wreath using a removable hook and enjoy your festive display.
