This bright yellow Daffodil is the last flower I am adding to our crochet bouquet (for now)! I may add a few more crochet flowers at some point, but Mother’s Day is this Sunday and I want to wrap up this project (and these flowers) for gifting!
It’s also Teacher Appreciation week and my daughter Zoe has been bringing these crochet flowers to her teachers. Everyone loves a handmade flower that lasts forever!
Let’s jump right into this tutorial!
Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Lemon Yellow, Saffron Yellow, and Spring Green
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Pipe Cleaners (green color is best but I only had brown on hand)
– Tapestry Needle
Crochet Daffodil:
Starting with lemon yellow yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 12 SC in ring, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 2-4: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
(turn and crochet round 5 the other direction if you want your want your petals to be right side up)
Round 5: Chain 6, *DC in 3rd chain from hook, TC (triple crochet) in next two, DC in last chain, skip a stitch and join to back loop of next stitch, chain 6 and repeat from * making 6 petals.
turn your work again, chain 1
Round 6: SC in each stitch from round 4 (front only loops if needed), (12 SC)
join in saffron yarn, chain 1
Round 7: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off and weave in ends. (12 SC)
If petals are curling inward, pop them out so they are laying nicely.
Stretch yarn a bit if needed so they hold their shape.
I’m going to test out this stiffen-quick fabric spray for all the flowers and will report back.
Stem:
with spring green yarn
Chain 36, SC in second chain from hook and in the next 32 chains (you should have 3 chains remaining), HDC in remaining 3 chains, chain 1, turn
Row 2: HDC in first 3 stithes, SC in remaining, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in first 32 stitches, HDC in remaining 3, fasten off leaving long tail
Tip: leave both loose ends attached.
Bend one end of your pipe cleaner and twist so it’s not pokey on the bottom. This will go on the bottom of your step. Leave the top of pipe cleaner sticking out over the top (where the HDC stitches are).
With your tapestry needle, stitch stem piece around your pipe cleaner. Make sure you stitch around the bottom so your pipe cleaner isn’t poking through.
Now with the end that is hanging over the top, loop it through a stitch on the back middle of the daffodil. This could get tricky because you don’t want it popping through the middle front of flower. Twist to secure it.
Leaf:
with spring green yarn
Chain 6, SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next, DC in next two, make 6 DC in last chain.
Now working on the other side of the chain, DC in next two, HDC in next, SC in last (do not join yet), chain 2 and make a SC in second chain from hook, join to first SC.
Stitch onto Daffodil stem
Make all 4 flowers!
