The secret to creating a crochet sunflower with a bendable and sturdy stem is to use a pipe cleaner! This crochet sunflower is so sweet by itself or in a bigger bouquet. The best part is that these flowers will last forever! I will be posting a few more flower patterns so we can make a beautiful set in time for Mother’s Day. Spring has sprung!
Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Cafe Latte Brown, Saffron Yellow, and Spring Green
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Pip Cleaners (green color is best but I only had brown on hand)
– Poly-fil fiber stuffing
– Tapestry Needle
Sunflower Crochet Pattern:
Center Flower (make 2):
with cafe latte brown yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3-4: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Place both of the circles together and SC the edges together. Be sure to stuff lightly with poly-fil before you completely close the center of the flower.
Petals:
join in yellow yarn
chain 3, skip a stitch, slip stitch to the next, chain 3 and repeat all the way around so you make 10 chain 3 spaces. If you have an extra petal space, that’s ok!
slip stitch over so you are working in the first chain 3 space.
SC + HDC + 3 DC + HDC + SC + slip stitch all in the first chain 3 space, repeat around making 10 petals. In some cases I was able to squeeze and extra petal in!
Stem:
with spring green yarn
Chain 26, SC in second chain from hook and in the next 32 chains (you should have 3 chains remaining), HDC in remaining 3 chains, chain 1, turn
Row 2: HDC in first 3 stithes, SC in remaining, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in first 32 stitches, HDC in remaining 3, fasten off leaving long tail
Tip: leave both loose ends attached.
bend one end of your pipe cleaner and twist so it’s not pokey on the bottom. This will go on the bottom of your step. Leave the top of pipe cleaner sticking out over the top (where the HDC stitches are).
With your tapestry needle, stitch stem piece around your pipe cleaner. Make sure you stitch around the bottom so your pipe cleaner isn’t poking through.
Now with the end that is hanging over the top, loop it through a stitch on the back middle of the sunflower. Twist to secure it.
Now stitch the top of the stem to the back middle of sunflower with your other loose end!
Leaf:
with spring green yarn
Chain 6, SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next, DC in next two, make 6 DC in last chain.
Now working on the other side of the chain, DC in next two, HDC in next, SC in last (do not join yet), chain 2 and make a SC in second chain from hook, join to first SC.
Stitch one or two leaves to the stem of your sunflower.
Make a set and put in vase!
Stay tuned for more flower patterns!
