How many times have you been floating in the pool thinking, “The sun is hot and I could really use an ice-cold drink, but getting out is the last thing I want to do”? Here’s a brilliant, simple fix: turn a giant pool float into a floating cooler. This DIY flamingo float cooler lets you keep drinks within arm’s reach while you lounge in the water.
The idea came from Cyn, who art directed and styled our Palm Springs shoots, and it’s basically a one-step DIY. Perfect for pool parties—your friends will love it.

DIY Flamingo Float Cooler
Total Time: 20 Minutes
Supplies
Large flamingo pool float (or another oversized float like a swan or novelty float)
Craft knife or box cutter
Pool float pump (optional, for faster inflation)
Ice and drinks
Directions
1. Inflate the main body of the flamingo fully. Inflate the inner center section slightly so it holds shape but is not fully taut — just enough to cut through without damaging underlying seams.
2. Carefully cut through the center section with a craft knife or box cutter, keeping several inches of margin between your cut and the main float’s seams.
3. Remove the cut piece and tidy the edge of the opening. Trim no closer than about 1″ to the outer seam to keep the float secure.
4. When you’re ready to use it as a cooler, position the modified float close to the pool edge before loading it with ice and drinks. The added weight can make it harder to move, so avoid dragging it across rough surfaces to prevent rips. Once filled, place it gently in the pool and enjoy.

This floating cooler is as clever as it is simple. When you want to pack it away, just deflate it like any other pool float. If you try this DIY, tag your photos so others can see your setup and get inspired.
p.s. Try pairing this idea with fun pool snacks like Piña Colada Pop Tarts for a themed party treat.
