DIY Honeycomb Christmas Tree Decoration Ideas

I hope all of you in the US had a lovely Thanksgiving! This was our first year staying home instead of traveling. We missed family, but it was a relief to skip airport stress. We spent the day with friends and had a wonderful time. Now it’s on to Christmas!

After our Martha Stewart craft party I ended up with a pile of honeycomb decorations, so I decided to turn them into a festive, space-saving Christmas tree. If your home is too small for a traditional tree, or you want a bright, playful option for a party or a kid’s room, a honeycomb tree is a great choice. The tree I made is about four feet tall, though it’s easy to scale up or down.

Supplies:

  • 5″ honeycomb decorations (for my ~4′ tree I used 49 honeycombs; adjust quantity for a larger or smaller tree)
  • Painter’s tape or another non-permanent adhesive

Before you begin, decide on your color layout if you’re using multiple hues. Laying out the pattern on the floor or sketching it first will save you from having to move pieces later. Work from the bottom up, starting with the trunk.

Attach a loop of painter’s tape or small pieces of adhesive to each side of every honeycomb. For the trunk, place four honeycombs in two rows and press them gently but firmly to the wall. Each honeycomb should be opened only halfway so the back can be secured to the wall while keeping its shape.

To build the tree shape, start above the trunk at the center. Position each honeycomb between the two below it so rows overlap and form the triangular silhouette of a tree. Continue adding honeycombs outward on each side to achieve the desired width, then stack additional rows upward until you end with a single honeycomb at the top.

Place presents and small decorations beneath the tree and enjoy the cheerful display. It’s a playful, low-effort focal point that’s especially fun for kids and small spaces.

If you have tall ceilings, consider making a larger version by lengthening the trunk and widening the rows, or use bigger honeycombs for a bold statement. The design adapts easily to different sizes and color schemes.
