Hey—it’s May! There’s still time to celebrate May Day with this fun dessert, but if you’re already planning ahead, here’s a bright, food-themed DIY you’ll love. Remember those little food picks topped with fringed cellophane? Toss the store-bought ones and make prettier, fuller versions yourself. I first thought of these while working on a paper flower project over Easter, and they’re perfect for Cinco de Mayo, backyard parties, or any summer gathering. All you need is tissue paper in your party colors and a few basic supplies.

Bonus: use the same technique on bamboo skewers to make colorful drink stirrers.

Supply List:
- Toothpicks
- Tissue paper (crepe paper also works)
- Scissors
- Glue
To make:
1. Cut strips of tissue paper about 4″ long by 1″ wide. Stack several strips if you want to cut multiple pieces at once.
2. Fringe the strips by cutting thin slits along one long edge, leaving a small uncut margin at the bottom so the fringe holds together.

3. Run a very thin line of glue along the uncut edge of the fringed strip. Place a toothpick at one end and carefully wrap the tissue around the stick, rolling until you reach the end. Use a minimal amount of glue so the tissue doesn’t get soggy or stiff.

4. Gently fluff the fringe to give it volume and texture. Trim any uneven edges if needed.

These picks are ideal for mini sandwiches, stacks of mini pancakes, appetizers, cupcake toppers, and more. Because they’re lightweight and customizable, you can match them to any color scheme or theme.
