We revisited our DIY graphic tees with a fresh idea: dyeing flocked iron-on letters. Rather than settling for the usual black and white options from the craft store, we experimented with fabric paint and discovered a simple technique that consistently yields bright, custom colors—perfect for creating an ombré rainbow or a single bold hue. Here’s a straightforward, time-efficient guide so you can customize letters for T-shirts, sweatshirts, and more.

DIY Dyed Flocked Letters
Total Time: One Hour (plus drying time)
Supplies
Iron-on flocked letters
Fabric paint in chosen colors
Water
Press ‘n Seal wrap or similar sticky surface
Paintbrush
Iron
Tea towel or thin cloth
T-shirt, sweatshirt, or other fabric item
Directions
1. Tear a piece of Press ‘n Seal (or similar) to create a temporary sticky work surface. Place the flocked letters on the sticky side so they stay put while you paint.
2. Pour small amounts of fabric paint into bowls and thin each color slightly with water. Thinning helps the paint blend and soaks into the flocked texture more evenly.
3. Paint the letters with your chosen colors. Because the letters are secured on the sticky sheet, you can work on several at once. For an ombré effect, paint one color on the top portion of each letter, then immediately brush the second color beneath it so the two merge while still wet.
4. Allow the painted letters to dry completely—overnight is best to ensure the paint sets into the flocking.
5. Once dry, arrange the letters on your garment. Place a tea towel or thin cloth over them and press with a hot iron following the letter manufacturer’s heat and pressing instructions. This bonds the flocked letters to the fabric without damaging the painted surface.
