After we caught the crochet bug, I wanted to add crochet food to everything — or at least to every sweater. We started with a classic: pizza. Using yarn from Commonthread by DMC, we crocheted a pizza patch and attached it to a cozy sweater. It’s fun, wearable, and easy to stick onto a sweatshirt, tote, or any garment you like. Below are step-by-step instructions and a list of supplies to make your own pizza slice patch.

We mixed a few different DMC yarns to give the slice realistic color and texture. My favorite detail is the mushrooms worked with metallic Tiara yarn — the shimmer creates subtle variations in tone that look surprisingly natural.

These instructions assume you know basic crochet stitches. If you’re new to crochet, there are many beginner tutorials available online to learn chain, slip stitch, and single crochet. For those familiar with the basics, here’s a quick glossary of abbreviations used below:
ch: chain stitch
sl st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet

Supplies:
- Chunky knit sweater or another clothing item
- DMC Woolly yarn in dark red, black, tan, and avocado
- DMC Belinda bamboo yarn in yellow
- DMC Metal Chic Tiara yarn in beige
- 2.75 mm crochet hook
- Small scissors
- Yellow embroidery thread (optional, for attaching the slice; yarn also works)
- DMC plastic craft needle

Crust
Ch 26.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, continue to end of row (25 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 2: sc across (25 sts), ch 1, turn.
Rows 3–14: Repeat Row 2.
Row 15: Fold the piece lengthwise, aligning the chain edge with the final row. Using the top of Row 14 and the bottom chain edge, single crochet the two halves together with 24 sc. On the 25th sc, change to the crust color yarn: insert hook, pull through with crust yarn and pause.
Sauce
With both loops of crust yarn on the hook, lay red yarn alongside the crust yarn in the opposite direction. Yarn over and finish the 25th sc using both strands. Drop the crust yarn and ch 1 with the red yarn only, then turn.

To attach toppings, use a plastic yarn needle and matching yarn for each topping. Stitch around the pieces, working across the stitches so the seam hides. Leave a short tail at each end under the pizza; after stitching, tie the tails together on the underside to secure.
To affix the slice to a sweater, use a plastic yarn needle and embroidery thread that matches the cheese color to stitch around the edge. For extra durability, apply an iron-on bonding strip before sewing the slice in place.
