Master Closet Makeover: Progress Update and Future Plans

Closet Shopping in LA!

It’s finally time to share an update on our master closet progress. We’re so close to finishing and, after sharing snippets on Instagram, I wanted to make the update official here on the blog. We’ll have a full reveal soon — things are moving quickly and it’s been so satisfying to watch the space come together.

For this project we partnered with Chevrolet. When they heard we’d just bought a house and were tackling renovations, they offered support: a loan of the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse for a day of shopping around Los Angeles, plus a professional organizer to help us design the space. The whole day was a blast — shopping, learning smarter ways to store everything, and collecting what we needed to finish the closet.

Here’s where we started.

The room had previously been used as a kitchenette — it even had an oven and an exterior door. We removed most of the old fixtures, insulated and finished the walls, and then moved into the closet build-out.

Chevy brought in Beth from Bneato Bar to help design and organize. The room needed to function as both a closet and a laundry area, and its odd layout meant we needed expert help to squeeze in everything. Our priorities were straightforward: a shoe wall, a dedicated area for accessories (we’d been tossing them everywhere), all-white shelving to let our colorful clothes pop, and space for a full-length mirror.

Beth was amazing. She inventoried our clothes and accessories, assigning items to drawers (t-shirts, small accessories), shelves (sweaters, jeans) and hanging space (blouses, jackets, dresses). She even attempted to count our shoes — a daunting task — and helped us plan the best layout to fit it all.

After working through several versions of the plan as we encountered renovation hurdles, we finalized the layout. We chose the Elfa system from The Container Store for the closet install — it was installed last week and looks fantastic.

With the structural plan set, Beth provided a shopping list of organizational essentials. I selected the decor pieces: because our wardrobe is very colorful, I wanted the overall space to stay bright and white, with bold pops of color in the accessories. We painted the walls white, chose a crisp white closet system, and installed an amazing scallop tile to add texture and interest.

To tie the closet to our bedroom design (I’ll share more on that later), I planned to repeat three design elements: pink, gold and rattan. That shows up in storage baskets, gold hardware, and — yes — a pink closet door. I also picked a rattan chandelier that I love; I might make a DIY version and move this one elsewhere if I do.

A Colorful Master Closet

I ordered three small vintage rugs to test in the space — yes, I’m a rug collector — and I’ll decide which to keep once I see them in place. The others will find homes elsewhere in the house or might become a wall hanging. It’s all part of the fun of finishing a space: tweaking until it feels right.

With the plan in hand, it was time to shop. Chevy’s Traverse was the perfect vehicle for the day: roomy cargo space, three rows, and cameras that show every angle while backing up — super helpful when loading and unloading bulky items. The seats fold easily with the push of a button, and the hands-free trunk opener (wave a foot under the illuminated Chevy symbol) was a lifesaver while carrying boxes. Little conveniences like that matter when you’re juggling purchases, a stroller and a toddler.

We shopped for drawer pulls, organization bins, a pink dustpan (essential, obviously), and more baskets than I probably need. One neat feature of the Traverse we appreciated was a hidden compartment behind the screen for valuables — handy for avoiding items being left in plain sight.

Back home, we laid everything out and it already looks so good. This first renovation has been a learning curve, but we’re thrilled with how it’s coming together and can’t wait to share the finished closet. Stay tuned for the reveal — it’s just around the corner.
