Block #1:

High Tide Square

by Jessie At Home

High Tide Square

Above you can see the square that Jessie made in 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 5 colors of Red Heart With Love – Merlot, Mallard, Boysenberry, Cornsilk, and Black. Big shoutout to those who encouraged me to add the yellow while I was on the live about the CAL – it definitely makes a difference and was much needed!

My Notes: The High Tide Square is a great one to kick off a new year of crochet! Chevrons are highlighted with rows of surface crochet for many color possibilities. Jessie didn’t know I was aiming for a stained glass look this year, but I couldn’t have asked for one more fitting. Before crocheting the border rounds and top stitching, my square was super wonky and skewed. I was surprised just how well those bits helped straighten it out! So don’t let that freak you out if you see the same. A strong blocking helped to finish getting it into shape.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Chainless Starting Double Crochet, Foundation Double Crochet, Extending a Row with Foundation Stitches, Foundation Stitches Increasing and Decreasing, Standing Double Crochet, Surface Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: I got to size as written, but you can easily add to or omit rounds of sc from the border til you get the size needed! Everyone’s gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

What I Did:

I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

Inc Rows 1 – 3: Merlot
Rows 5 and 5:
Mallard
Rows 6 and 7:
Boysenberry
Dec Rows 1 and 2:
Merlot
Rows 3 and 4:
Cornsilk
Rows 5 and 6:
Boysenberry
Border Rnds 1 and 2:
Merlot
Border Rnd 3:
Mallard
Border Rnd 4:
Cornsilk
Border Rnd 5:
Black
Top Stitching:
Black

This square required a strong blocking. I used the wet blocking method as well as steaming.
