Apparently I have a tendency to send gifts that explode into confetti and create a fun mess. At least it’s a cheerful kind of chaos. Remember the “congrats in a box” idea? For my dad’s recent big birthday in April—when I couldn’t be there and money was tight—I put together a surprise message in a box. It’s an easy, heartfelt idea that also works perfectly for Father’s Day: a paper airplane message in a box.

My dad is a history buff—he even wrote a book about World War II—so I made a Gettysburg Address–inspired message printed across several paper airplanes. I crafted each plane from maps of the states he’s lived in, using a simple paper-airplane folding tutorial. The result felt personal and meaningful, and the map paper added a nostalgic, travel-inspired touch.

After folding the planes, I stamped a portion of the message onto each one and taped them along a length of twine to create a garland. One end carried a “Happy Birthday” tag, and the other had a “Pull Here” sign. I stacked the airplanes in a box, tucked in a handful of blue confetti (made by running sheets of blue paper through my shredder), and left only the “Pull Here” sign visible. When the recipient pulls, the garland unfurls and the airplanes reveal the message—simple, surprising, and festive.

This project is inexpensive, quick to assemble, and adaptable: change the paper, message, or colors to suit any occasion. It also doubles as charming party decor—display the garland after it’s been pulled from the box for an instant conversation piece. If you want to avoid confetti, replace it with tissue paper or shredded map scraps for a coordinated look. Either way, it’s a small, thoughtful surprise that brings a big smile.
