Random Color Block Crochet Scarf Free Pattern & Tutorial

introduction

About this Pattern

If you’re looking for a way to shake up your crochet routine, this is a great place to start! Rather than organizing your color scheme and stripe pattern before you get started, leave it all up to chance.

For our Random Stripes Crochet Scarf we encourage you to number each mini skein in the packet of recommended yarn and draw numbers out of a hat (or use your phone’s virtual assistant) to randomize the colors and the order you work them in this scarf. Whichever number you draw first is the first color you’ll use. When that one runs out, draw the next number and so on until you go through them all. The result is a “super scarf” that’s large enough for multiple layers.

Before you begin, review this page entirely so you understand the full scope of the project. We have a list of recommended supplies and abbreviations here on this page as well as written instructions and a tutorial to walk you through our random stripes crochet scarf step-by-step.

getting started

Recommended Supplies

  • Approx 1,260 yds; Caron Little Crafties Yarn
  • 5.5 mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

FAQ: Can I use a different yarn?
Sure, as long as it’s in the same weight category. Check your gauge and adjust as needed so the sizing comes out right. The recommended yarn amount will likely be different too.

Additional Notes

Finished Size

5.5″ wide; 116″ long (assembled)

Gauge

20 sts and 18 rows = 4″ worked in stitch pattern

Additional Notes: We took the completely random approach to organizing colors. This was a fun exercise! Label each skein number 1 through 20. Then draw numbers out of a hat, ask a friend for a random number between 1 and 20 or ask your phone’s digital assistant to give you a random number between 1 and 20.

Chain 1 at beginning of row does not count as a stitch.
