Washi Tape Cactus Wall Art Tutorial: Step-by-Step DIY Decor Guide

Cactus crafts and colorful shapes

Ever since I taught that taco workshop, I’ve been obsessed with cacti. I wanted to try a variety of cactus DIYs, and this washi tape wall art project was perfect — simple, colorful, and quick to do any time of year. I browsed Cute Tape’s online shop and found an incredible selection of washi tape in every shade and pattern. They also carry party supplies like tissue honeycombs, which I used as playful “buds” on the cacti. The result is a fun, space-saving wall display that could even stand in for a modern, minimalist Christmas tree. Below is a clear, easy guide to recreate this look on your own wall.

Materials needed:

  • Several rolls of washi tape in green shades and patterns (mix solids, stripes, and dots for texture).
  • 5″ tissue honeycombs in bright colors (I used cerise, yellow, orange, and red).
  • Scissors (optional) and a pencil for sketching.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Choose a wall with enough open space. Lightly sketch the cactus shapes on paper or directly on the wall with a pencil if you prefer a guide.
  2. Tear or cut small pieces of washi tape. Start at the bottom of your planned cactus and work upward, layering pieces of tape to build the shape. Slight overlaps and modest angle changes create a natural, rounded look. For long straight sections, use continuous strips of tape for a smooth finish.
  3. Fill in the main body of each cactus completely, mixing different green patterns and tones for depth and interest.
  4. Add the honeycomb “buds.” Loop short strips of washi tape around the edge of a folded honeycomb section to attach each one. Press one side of the tape to the wall, unfold the honeycomb, and secure the opposite side. Position the honeycombs where they look most playful or balanced.
  5. Step back and adjust spacing, angle, or color placement as needed. The tape is forgiving, so you can reposition pieces until you’re happy with the composition.

This is a flexible, low-cost way to decorate any blank wall. You can scale the cactus sizes to fit a small corner or an entire wall, and the honeycomb buds let you introduce bright pops of color. If you want a seasonal twist, arrange the cacti as a whimsical Christmas tree and add small honeycombs as ornaments. Have fun experimenting with different tape patterns and honeycomb colors to match your space.
