Crochet a Cabled Scarf or Shawl Today – Mazu! – Expression Fiber Arts | A Positive Twist on Yarn

Mazu was designed by Jessica Khochare. When asked about this pattern, Jessica said, “This seafarer-themed crochet pattern features a Celtic knot motif on the vertical panel, reminiscent of interwoven ropes. The knots symbolize harmony, friendship, and affection—values highly regarded by those who brave the open sea. Additionally, the horizontal brioche panels draw inspiration from seagrass meadows, which play a vital role in coastal storm protection and carbon dioxide sequestration. Crafted with intricate overlay work and featuring the elegant brioche crochet style, this scarf will definitely become your go-to accessory.”

This Intermediate to Advanced level pattern is perfect for the adventurous crocheter who loves to tackle something a bit more complicated. Skills/concepts include post stitches, working in long rows and long repeat sections, and reading charts (optional – shawl version). This pattern includes written and charted instructions, photo tutorials, and a schematic.

The Scarf Version of Mazu is crocheted using our sumptuous CashSilk Sock yarn, which is a heavenly blend of 75% Superwash Merino Wool, 15% Cashmere, and 10% Silk that has 410 yds/375 m per skein. It’s a dreamy soft, luxurious sock yarn that’s warm, cuddly, squishy, and strong with the tiniest hint of glow. Its 4-ply structure results in round, beautifully defined stitches, which is perfect for long-wearing items like sweaters and socks. Equally wonderful for scarves and shawls, baby clothes, blankets, and other accessories!

If using CashSilk Sock yarn and crocheting the Scarf Version, you’ll need three skeins of Color A and one of Color B. The version shown here was crocheted with Icy CashSilk Sock (Color A) and June Pearl CashSilk Sock (Color B) and used approximately 1,370 yds/1,253 m total (Color A: 1,050 yds/960 m and Color B: 320 yds/293 m).

The Shawl Version of Mazu is crocheted with our Limited Edition North Fingering yarn, which is a soft treasure that feels like a cool breeze and warm hug all at once. This lovely blend of 66% Extra Fine Merino Wool and 34% Pima Cotton offers the best of both worlds and has a generous 437 yds/400 m per skein. Undyed Pima Cotton is wrapped delicately around the Merino Wool, which creates a subtle marled effect that adds interest and depth to every stitch. Inspired by my Alaskan home, this yarn collection captures the serenity of northern skies and quiet landscapes.

If using North Fingering yarn and crocheting the Shawl Version, you’ll need four skeins of Color A and one of Color B. The version shown here was crocheted with Cold Horizon North Fingering (Color A) and Snowfall Hymn North Fingering (Color B) and used approximately 1,616 yds/1,478 m total (Color A: 1,424 yds/1,302 m and Color B: 192 yds/176 m).

If using our North Fingering yarn, be sure to order all you’ll need for your project. Once this Limited Edition yarn sells out, it’s gone for good.
