DIY Emoji Heart Pillow: Step-by-Step Sewing Guide

Someone holding a pink heart pillow with gold stars

Did you spot that emoji heart pillow on the couch in our Galentine’s Day slumber party photos? It’s a simple DIY you can make at home. This plush heart is inspired by our emoji heart balloons and is perfect for Valentine’s Day—or any time you want a cute, cozy accent.

The pillow shown was made with shiny hot pink fabric and small gold starburst accents. It’s quick to sew, looks great on a sofa or bed, and makes a thoughtful handmade gift.

Instructions

1. Fold the pink fabric in half with right sides together. Use chalk or a fabric pencil to draw a heart shape large enough for a pillow. Cut the heart shape through both layers so you end up with two identical heart pieces.
2. Fold the gold fabric in half and draw a starburst shape. Cut through both layers, then trace and cut two more so you have four starburst pieces total. Each starburst will become a small stuffed accent to sew on the heart.
3. With right sides still together, sew the two pink heart pieces along the edge using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, leaving a 3-inch opening for turning and stuffing. Sew each pair of starburst pieces the same way, also leaving a small opening.
4. Clip small notches along the curved seams and trim the points of the heart and starbursts to reduce bulk so the shapes turn smoothly. Turn all pieces right side out.
5. Fill the heart and each starburst with polyester stuffing until they are plump and even. Don’t overstuff; leave them soft enough to shape by hand.
6. Close the openings with an invisible slip stitch by hand for a neat finish.
7. Lay the starbursts on the front of the heart to find an arrangement you like. Tack each starburst in place by hand with small stitches about two inches from each point so they sit securely on the pillow without visible machine stitching.
