I adore gingham — it’s the quintessential print for spring and summer. I bought these gingham treat bags on a whim because they were so charming, and I finally turned them into an even more summery project. With a few cardstock flowers, brads and baker’s twine, these simple bags transform into sweet envelopes for party invitations, cards or favors. Fill them however you like, but first — here’s a clear, easy DIY guide.
Supplies:
- Treat bags (gingham or any pattern you prefer)
- Cardstock for flower shapes
- Brads (two per bag)
- Baker’s twine or thin string
- Scissors
- Awl, needle or another sharp tool for making small holes
Steps:
- Draw a simple flower shape on cardstock and cut it out. You’ll need two flower cutouts for each envelope.
- Decide how deep you want the envelope to be and fold the top of the treat bag down to create a flap.
3. Position one flower on the bag’s front about an inch below the folded flap. Use an awl or needle to pierce a small hole through the flower and only the top layer of the bag — take care not to pierce the back layer.
4. Insert a brad through the flower and the top layer of the bag, then spread and secure the brad on the inside. Repeat the same process on the flap: position the second flower on the flap, pierce only the flap layer, and secure with a brad.
5. Cut a length of baker’s twine to suit the size of your bag. Tie one end of the twine in a knot under the top flower’s brad so the knot is hidden behind the flower.
6. Fill the bag with your chosen contents — invitations, sweets, small favors or notes.
7. To close, wrap the baker’s twine around the two flower brads so the flap is held in place. You can wrap once or twice depending on how secure you want the closure to be, and tuck the end under the wrapped loops to finish.
