Supplies Needed

You only need a few simple items to run a football squares pool:

  • Free Printable Football Squares PDF
  • Printer
  • Pens or markers
  • Prizes or a cash pool (optional)

Prizes aren’t required but they make the game more exciting. If you want a cash prize, collect a set amount per square from participants. People can buy as many squares as you allow, or you can limit the number of squares per person to keep things fair.

Home-hosted prizes can be simple — snacks, gift cards, or small trophies work great.

How to Play Football Squares

Assign Teams

Label the columns with one team and the rows with the other team. These headings determine which team’s score corresponds to each axis on the grid.

Claim Squares

Have players claim squares on the grid. You can distribute squares evenly, let people choose freely, or sell squares for a cash pool. Allowing players to buy multiple squares increases their chances of winning.

Assign Numbers to Each Row and Column

Once all squares are claimed, randomly assign the digits 0–9 to each column and each row. These numbers represent the final digit of each team’s score at the end of each quarter.

Watch the Game!

At the end of each quarter, take the last digit of each team’s score. The player who owns the square at the intersection of those two digits wins that quarter.

For example, if Team A has 24 points and Team B has 27 at the end of Q1, the square where 4 (Team A) and 7 (Team B) intersect is the winning square for that quarter.

Give Out Prizes

Decide in advance how to distribute prizes: equal amounts for each quarter, larger amounts for later quarters, or a single prize for the final score. Choose whatever format best fits your group.
