How to Make Balloon Cupcake Toppers: Step-by-Step Guide

First of all, thank you so much for the kind, positive, and supportive comments on yesterday’s post. Hearing that I’ve inspired even a few of you means the world to me. Also, as yesterday’s post showed, you guys love balloons. Since I don’t have an actual balloon project to share today, how about some paper balloons—perfect as cupcake toppers. If you’re on a New Year’s cleanse, you might want to look away for a moment.

I made these for a birthday giveaway winner and kept a few extras so I could share the simple how-to. They’d be adorable for baby showers, birthdays, or any celebration.

Supplies:

  • Cardstock
  • Paper clips*
  • Scissors
  • Double-stick tape

*For safety, wash paper clips in hot water before use. You can also wrap the bottom of the paper clip with tape. These are decorative only and should be removed from the cupcake before eating.

Begin by straightening your paper clips into a single line, then gently curve the top by twirling it around your finger. Create a small balloon-shaped template and use it to cut out as many balloon shapes as you need—remember that each topper uses two cutouts.

Place double-stick tape on the back of one balloon cutout and attach the top of the paper clip to the bottom area of that cutout (about half an inch from the edge). Then press the second balloon cutout onto the first, sandwiching the paper clip between the two layers. When pressing the pieces together, focus on pressing around the edges rather than directly over the paper clip to avoid creasing the paper.

Once assembled, simply push the paper clip stem into your cupcakes and enjoy the festive touch.

I love these because they never deflate—hooray! They’re easy to customize too; try heart-shaped balloons for Valentine’s Day or mix colors for a themed party. These toppers are a quick, inexpensive way to add charm to cupcakes and other treats.
