French Fry Costume Tutorial

1. Cut four cardboard pieces to form the fry container: front, back and two sides. A useful reference size is about 25 inches wide, 15 inches deep, 33 inches tall at the back and 19 inches tall at the front, but adjust for your height. Spray paint all pieces red on both sides and allow to dry completely following the paint manufacturer’s directions.

2. Attach one side to the back with hot glue. Run a line of glue along the edge of the back piece, press the side piece into place to hold it, then add more glue along the inner seam for strength. Repeat for the other side.

3. Glue the front piece to the sides in the same way: apply glue to the side edges, position the front piece, then reinforce the inner seams with more glue. Having an extra pair of hands helps for alignment. Try the container on and mark where you want the shoulder straps to attach—about 9 inches apart at the front (criss-crossed) and around 11 inches apart at the back works well.

4. Make the fries from the upholstery foam. Work on a sacrificial surface such as a piece of cardboard. Use a box cutter to make one shallow slit the length of the fry, then follow through with a smooth cut to slice cleanly. Cutting thicker foam is easier if you take steady, controlled passes rather than forcing the blade in a single motion.

5. Cut two fry lengths: shorter and taller pieces. For example, cut about ten fries at 3″ wide and 24″ long for shorter fries, then cut the remaining foam into longer pieces around 40″ long for the back row. Adjust lengths to suit your container height.

6. Spray paint all foam fries yellow. Vary the coverage slightly so they don’t all look uniformly colored—this gives a more natural, fried look. Let paint dry fully per the product instructions.

7. Hot glue the fries inside the container. Start by gluing the taller fries along the back at staggered heights. Add one or two fries to each side, leaving arm openings where you want them. Finish by attaching the shorter fries to the front. Thread the ribbon straps into place and secure them so the costume sits comfortably on your shoulders.

8. Create the “>” bucket by applying white tape in the shape of the symbol to a black bucket or cauldron. Use it as a playful prop for photos and candy collection.
