I’m so excited to share this DIY—I’ve been dreaming up these giant cupid’s arrow balloons for a while and couldn’t wait to make them! With a little duct tape and simple supplies you can create a bold, oversized balloon that makes a big statement with minimal effort. These are perfect to surprise your Valentine or delight kids and party guests. Below you’ll find a clear, step-by-step guide to make your own.

These balloons are huge and so fun to make. The combination of metallic or colored duct tape and simple cardboard makes a lightweight arrow that looks professional and holds well on a helium heart balloon.

Supplies
Scotch Duct Tape in Pearl White, Cherry Red and Hot Pink
Paper towel rolls (two per balloon; for a less exaggerated arrow, use toilet paper rolls or tape two together)
Sharp art/utility knife and cutting mat
Cardstock
Scissors
36″ heart balloons (helium-filled)
Step 1 — Cover the Tubes
Start by covering each paper towel roll with duct tape in your chosen color. Wrap strips around the tube until it’s completely covered. Keep edges smooth and overlap slightly so the finish is seamless. If you want stripes or patterns, cut narrower strips and layer them on top for a custom look.

Step 2 — Make Arrow Ends
Cut the arrowhead and fletching from cardstock. There are many arrow styles—pick a shape you like or copy the ones shown. For the tail, fringe the cardstock for a feathered look. On one end of each wrapped tube, cut two small slits about 1–2 inches deep and insert the cardstock arrowhead and tail pieces into these slits. They should hold snugly; if needed, secure from the inside with a small piece of duct tape.

Step 3 — Prepare Attachment Tabs
On the opposite end of each tube add a strip of duct tape around the rim, letting about an inch hang off the bottom. Cut small, evenly spaced slits in the exposed tape to create flexible tabs that will wrap gently around the balloon surface.

Step 4 — Attach to the Balloon
Have a second person hold the balloon steady so the arrow sits straight. Align the lower arrow tube where you want it to appear to “enter” the balloon and press the tabs gently onto the balloon surface. Press firmly to secure; the duct tape bonds well and holds tight. Avoid repositioning the tape once it’s stuck, as pulling or shifting can risk popping the balloon. With the helper’s guidance, attach the opposite tube at the diagonal, creating the illusion of an arrow shot through the heart.

Finishing and Tips
That’s it—you’re done! These arrow balloons are large, so consider size when transporting them. They fit in the back seat of most sedans but take care not to bend or crush the arrows. A fully helium-filled 36″ heart balloon should keep afloat for several days. If you want to make the arrow less dramatic, switch to narrower tubes or smaller balloons.
