An oversized scrunchie is an effortless summer accessory that instantly elevates any outfit. It adds a chic, playful touch and works with both casual and dressy looks. Below is a simple, step-by-step guide to make your own oversized scrunchie using any fabric you love.
I chose bright floral fabrics for a fresh, summery vibe inspired by the Garden Joy game. The same prints you see here can be swapped for linen, cotton, rayon, or any lightweight woven fabric you prefer.

Supplies Needed
- Floral or patterned fabric (light to medium weight)
- Elastic 1/2″ or narrower (7″ length for the scrunchie)
- Sewing machine or needle and thread (fabric glue is an alternative)
- Hand needle for finishing stitches
- Fabric scissors
- Safety pin for threading elastic

Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. Cut a rectangle of fabric measuring 10″ x 36″. This size creates a full, oversized scrunchie; adjust the length or width slightly for a smaller or puffier effect.

2. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with right sides together. Sew along the long edge with a 1/2″ seam allowance, leaving a 3″ opening near one end to turn the tube right side out.

3. Reach through the opening and push one end of the fabric tube through the tube so the right side of the fabric comes out. Align the raw edges at the opening.
4. Close the short seam where the raw edges meet by sewing with a 1/2″ seam allowance. This joins the tube into a circle while still leaving the turning opening on the long seam.

5. Turn the ring right side out through the opening you left on the seam so the right side of the fabric is visible and the seam is hidden inside.
6. Cut a 7″ piece of elastic. Attach a safety pin to one end and thread the elastic through the fabric tube until it emerges from the other side.

7. Overlap the elastic ends by about 1/2″ and sew them securely together with several stitches, or use a zig-zag stitch on your machine for strength.
8. Tuck the seam and any raw edges inside the fabric opening and hand-stitch the opening closed with small, neat stitches for an invisible finish.

Your oversized scrunchie is finished. It pairs beautifully with light summer dresses, tees and jeans, or any look that needs a pop of color and texture.

No-Sew Oversized Scrunchie
If you prefer not to sew, you can substitute fabric glue for stitching at each step. Use a strong, fabric-specific adhesive and follow the manufacturer’s drying times, allowing glue to set fully before moving to the next step. The result will be just as pretty and wearable.

How to Wear an Oversized Scrunchie
An oversized scrunchie looks great with a low ponytail, high ponytail, or a loose low bun. It complements casual tees and jeans as well as breezy summer dresses. Because it adds volume and pattern, it’s perfect for errands, beach days, garden parties, or date night.
For everyday styling, match the scrunchie color to a dress, bag, or shoes to create a coordinated look. For a bolder statement, mix patterns or pair a floral scrunchie with solid neutrals.
