DIY Honeycomb Christmas Ornaments: Make Festive Bulb Decorations

This DIY project is one of my favorites for the holiday season: honeycomb Christmas bulbs and ornaments. Using classic party honeycomb balls, you can create oversized, statement-making holiday decorations. The idea is simple, budget-friendly, and easy to customize—turn the honeycomb spheres into bulb shapes, ornaments, or any festive form you like.

Supplies:

  • Honeycomb balls (available at party stores)
  • Scissors
  • Cardboard tube (paper towel roll works well)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Gold tinsel
  • Ribbon
  • Masking tape

How to make the bulbs:

1. Start by folding the honeycomb ball the way it comes packaged. On the folded edge, draw a half-bulb outline—wider at the top and tapering toward the bottom (it won’t form a sharp point). Cut along that line through all layers to create the bulb shape.

2. Make the decorative top using a short ring cut from a cardboard tube—about 1.5″ tall. Run a bead of hot glue around the ring and press gold tinsel onto the glued edge, covering the tube ring to resemble a bulb cap.

3. Set the topped ring aside. Attach a length of ribbon to the inside top edge of the honeycomb bulb with a piece of masking tape so the ribbon will act as a hanger.

4. Slide the tinsel-covered cardboard ring over the ribbon so it sits at the top of the bulb. Secure the ring to the ribbon on one side with a small dab of hot glue or extra tape so it stays in place.

5. Hang your oversized faux bulbs from a ceiling, porch, garland, or a large bow. Group several together for a dramatic effect or use single bulbs as ornaments on a tree. The look is festive and eye-catching.

Variation: For an even quicker ornament version, simply attach the tinsel-covered ring to a full honeycomb ball without cutting it into a bulb shape. Add ribbon and hang—instant ornament!
