Burger balloons are a playful, unexpected way to celebrate Father’s Day or any summer barbecue. Inspired by a savory twist on party decor, these foil “burger” balloons bring a bit of whimsy to the grill-side celebration. They make a funny and festive accessory tied to a new grill or clustered as a centerpiece. Below is a simple, step-by-step guide to create your own burger balloons at home, plus tips to help them float and look their best.

Safety and application tips: You can use low-temperature hot glue on mylar balloons if you apply it carefully. Keep the glue gun on a low setting, avoid pressing the tip directly against the balloon, and use small amounts of glue. I applied roughly one-inch lines every six inches. Excess glue adds weight and can reduce float time.

How to make burger balloons:
1. Inflate the yellow mylar balloon with helium. Cut a strip of brown tissue paper about 2 inches tall and long enough to wrap around the balloon. Give the top or bottom edge a slightly wavy cut to mimic a bun. If your tissue is small, use two strips to complete the wrap. Apply small lines of low-temp hot glue about a half inch below the balloon seam and press the brown paper around the balloon.
2. Cut a 1.5-inch strip of green tissue paper with a more pronounced wavy edge to resemble lettuce. Attach this layer slightly above the brown layer using glue dots so it looks tucked between the bun layers.
3. Cut small circles or ovals from red tissue paper to represent tomato slices and stick them between the green and brown layers with glue dots.
4. To make the balloons float in a horizontal, burger-like orientation, secure the ribbon to the bottom of the balloon with clear shipping tape. Use strong, clear shipping tape rather than decorative washi so the ribbon stays attached and the tape remains unobtrusive.

These burger balloons are versatile: use them at a Fourth of July cookout as an alternative to classic red, white and blue decor, or include them at any summer barbecue for an extra dose of charm.

Note: A helium kit that includes a tank, latex balloons and ribbon is a convenient way to make party-ready balloons at home. If you plan multiple balloons, a refillable or larger-capacity option will save time. Be mindful of helium safety instructions and local regulations.
