Crocheting the Perfect Ribbed Beanie
I’ve had this pattern in the works for a very long time! Since ribbed beanies are a classic winter staple that look effortlessly cozy and snug, I have been determined to come up with a pattern for the perfect crochet ribbed beanie to share with you all. It’s pretty straight forward to knit a ribbed beanie, but when it comes to crochet, the patterns available are lacking when it comes to crown shaping.
I realized that by working the hat flat and single crocheting in the back loops only, I could create the perfect stretchy ribbed texture. I’d also been experimenting with short rows and knew they’d be ideal for shaping the crown so the beanie hugs the head just right. And just like that, my crochet ribbed beanie pattern was born!
I also tested out different ways to seam it up while keeping the ribbing nice and continuous. I was pretty excited when it all came together—and I even made video tutorial to walk you through the process! You can find it on my YouTube Channel at the following link: How to Crochet a Ribbed Beanie.
Choosing Yarn for Your Ribbed Beanie
This hat will look and feel the best if you make it with a 100% wool yarn. Wool yarn is the go-to choice for a winter hat because of its natural warmth, breathability, and durability. Wool fibres have a unique structure that traps heat, which makes it perfect for keeping cozy on chilly days. At the same time, it’s breathable, so it helps regulate temperature and prevents overheating. Plus, it is also naturally moisture-wicking, which means it can keep you warm even if it gets a little damp from snow or rain. And not to mention, wool is stretchy, so your hat will maintain its shape and stay comfortable through lots of wear.
I chose to work with Knit Picks High Desert Worsted Weight Yarn because I love the quality and one skein is exactly the amount required to make one beanie.

Size/Measurements
This ribbed beanie pattern is written for a head circumference of 21-22 inches. The Ad Free PDF file contains two additional sizes and can be purchased on this page (see end of pattern).
Construction & Notes
- Beanie is crocheted flat, with short rows used to shape the crown.
- Seam the hat along the open side (watch end of video tutorial linked to above for seaming crochet ribbing).
- Use a larger hook for the foundation chain, or chain loosely to keep foundation edge stretchy.
- Work single crochet stitches into the back bumps of the foundation chain stitches.
