Knit the Stunning, Lacy Hardscrabble Shawl Today! – Expression Fiber Arts | A Positive Twist on Yarn

Hardscrabble was designed by Patricia Liefeld. When asked about the inspiration for this shawl, Patricia said, “During a recent RV trip through Missouri, we visited the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home and Museum. I grew up reading the Little House on the Prairie books and watching the TV show, which was filmed in my home town of Simi Valley. The word “hardscrabble” is an appropriate term that describes her life growing up. Evidence of this was displayed throughout the locations. Also displayed was her talent for knitting. One item was a sampler, which inspired this lace shawl. I wanted something with different stitch patterns and colors to create interest. Maybe you’ll learn a new stitch, or find a new favorite? Pay attention to how the same pattern can look different just by changing color. I hope this shawl inspires you just as Laura Ingalls’ sampler inspired me.”This Intermediate level pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include special stitches, lace knitting, and charts. The pattern includes written and charted instructions.

Hardscrabble is knitted with our luxurious Oasis Camel Silk Fingering, which is an exotic, sultry blend of 50% camel fiber and 50% Mulberry silk with incredible softness and shimmer! Wonderful for heirloom or wedding shawls, other wraps, scarves, sweaters, and so much more with 500 yds (457 m) per 3-ply skein. Camel is a super soft fiber that’s similar to cashmere in its softness. It’s a lightweight fiber with a subtle sheen that’s also strong and smooth. Mulberry silk is also smooth and strong with a slinky feel that helps it slide nicely on your needles and hooks. Both fibers take the dye wonderfully, which results in saturated colors that really pop! When camel fiber is combined with Mulberry silk, you get an enchanting yarn that is a true delight!

The sample shown here was knitted with colors A) Cherish, B) Ceres, C) Captain, D) Cypress, E) Diaphanous, and F) Take Chances Oasis Fingering. The sample shown used approximately 1,173 yds/1,073 m total: Color A: 183 yds/167 m, Color B: 207 yds/189 m, Color C: 182 yds/166 m, Color D: 208 yds/190 m, Color E: 196 yds/179 m, and Color F: 197 yds/180 m.
