I planned to save this DIY cotton candy piñata for what I thought was National Cotton Candy Day in December, only to discover there are actually several cotton candy days. Since July 31st is apparently another one, I’m more than happy to celebrate now instead of waiting five more months. I used the same basic structure from my pineapple piñata—cocoon lanterns are surprisingly versatile—and transformed it into a fluffy pink treat. Cotton candy is definitely having its moment.

Supplies:
Cocoon lantern
Polyester stuffing (fiberfill)
Pink spray paint
White computer paper
Hot glue gun
Fishing line

Instructions:
- Work in a well-ventilated area. Evenly spray the polyester stuffing with pink spray paint and let it dry completely. The fiberfill may show some natural color variation, which looks fine and adds texture.
- Starting at the top of the cocoon lantern, attach small clumps of the dried pink stuffing to the outside with hot glue. Continue working downward until the lantern is fully covered and looks fluffy.
- To make the cone at the bottom, layer two sheets of white computer paper, then roll them together into a tight cone shape.
- Trim the cone to the desired length so it fits the lantern’s interior.
- Secure the paper cone inside the lantern using hot glue. You can glue it directly to one side, or pinch the cone’s top ends together over the lantern’s metal support and glue them so the cone hangs centered.
- Tie a length of fishing line to the metal support at the top of the lantern for hanging. To fill the piñata, cut a circle of paper or cardstock roughly 1/2 inch larger than the bottom opening, place it just inside the opening to hold the candy, then add treats and you’re ready.

This piñata would also make a delightful decorative piece for a child’s room—who says a piñata has to be smashed? It works just as well as a whimsical hanging lamp or party decoration.
