Introduction to Crochet Blanket Patterns
One of the first things a beginner crocheter might try out is a soft and warm crochet blanket! It’s a large project but is repetitive enough to be beginner-friendly and practical to boot!
In this blog post, we’re dropping more than 30 free patterns forTemperature fast and easy crochet blanket patterns that are a joy to work on and a joy to gift to your loved ones!
Why Make a Crochet Blanket?
Crochet blankets are a great project for beginners because of how repetitive the task is since blankets often use a repeating stitch pattern throughout. Blankets are also big enough that you’ll get a lot of practice and be honing your skill as a crocheter as you go.
Depending on the size, crocheted afghans or blankets can also be long-term projects that you can make over the course of a few weeks or months in between smaller projects.
You can create a blanket using any yarn, stitch, or hook you have on hand or use the project to experiment with multiple kinds of yarn.
Most of all, blankets are warm, cozy, and comfortable so they’re perfect for your home or as gifts for your loved ones!
Choosing a Crochet Blanket Size
The great thing about blanket sizes is that they don’t have to be extremely exact in the way that a sweater would. If you want to crochet a blanket for a bed, however, then you need to know whether your blanket will drape over the sides of your bed.
The smallest size blanket you can make is called a lovey which measures 12×12 inches or 30×30 centimeters. A baby blanket can be a range of sizes but they are typically around 42×52 inches or 107×132 centimeters.
If you want to go BIG, then a California King would go for about 104×108 inches, but that’ll take a whole lot of time and work!!!
Easy Crochet has a great blanket sizing chart to help you figure out what to go with for your project if you need to deviate from the size suggested in the pattern.
What You Need to Start Crocheting a Blanket
Yarn
Crochet blankets can be made with any weight of yarn that you have on hand, but while you are practicing your technique, any (4) worsted or medium weight yarn is a great choice. Worsted weight yarn isn’t too big or too small, which makes it great for getting the hang of how to make stitches.
Knit Picks Brava Worsted is a great one to use as it has great stitch definition as well as a wide array of colors.
You can also opt for a bulky weight yarn such as Lion Brand Hue + Me for your blanket to make it work up more quickly and to make it even warmer. If the pattern calls for worsted weight and you want to use bulky yarn, make a swatch to see how many stitches per inch you are getting so you can adjust the pattern to the size you need.
Crochet Hook
Always pick an appropriate size crochet hook for the weight of yarn you are using. If you are using a medium/worsted weight yarn, you’ll want a hook in the range of I-K, or 5.5 to 6.5 mm.
If you’re following a pattern, use the hook size that is recommended for that project. You can use the size suggested on the yarn label if you are designing your own.
The Clover Amour Crochet Hook Set has a full range of crochet hook sizes for whatever project you want to work on!
Notions & Tools
While the top two things you need are your yarn and a hook, it’s always a good idea to have these extra tools nearby whenever you’re crocheting:
Best Beginner Crochet Stitches for Blankets
Single Crochet Stitch
The single crochet stitch is one of the most basic crochet stitches and usually the first one any crocheter will learn. This stitch creates a dense fabric for maximum warmth but not a lot of height so it will take a while to work up.

Tips for Crocheting a Blanket
- Count stitches and use stitch markers. Blankets are a fairly large project and if you lose track of your progress, it might affect the overall look. Use stitch markers on every 10th or 20th stitch for easy counting at the end of your row to ensure you’re keeping a consistent stitch count.
- Be mindful of your tension. Individual gauge doesn’t really matter much with crochet blankets but the tension doesn’t just differ between two crocheters. Your own tension can change throughout a project, especially one as large as a blanket. Keep track of what hook you’re using and be mindful of how much your mood can affect the tightness of your stitches.
- Consider blocking your work. If you’re working with granny squares, making a circle or hexagon blanket, or just prefer a smooth-edged blanket, then you should consider blocking. It’s a few extra steps but it gives you straight edges and sharp corners like you wouldn’t believe!
