If I were ever to host a haunted house (which I won’t), this is about as spooky as I’d make it: glittery spiders dangling from helium balloons on the ceiling. I’ve said before I don’t love terrifying Halloween decor, but these playful spiders are the perfect balance of spooky and fun. They make a dramatic entrance piece or a whimsical “chandelier” above a dessert table. Glitter is optional but recommended—after all, the only acceptable spiders are the ones that sparkle and float. Agree?

Supplies:
Balloons filled with helium
Martha Stewart Crafts plastic spiders or similar lightweight spider decorations
Glitter (optional) — gold leaf or any fine glitter for best coverage
Decoupage glue
Paintbrush
Twine or string to tie to balloons
Awl or small tool to make a hole in the spider
If you choose to add glitter, brush a thin layer of decoupage glue onto the areas of the spider you want to cover. Sprinkle glitter over the glued areas, shake off excess, and allow to dry. Once dry, seal the glitter with another thin layer of decoupage glue to prevent shedding, and let that dry completely.

To attach the spider to the balloon string, carefully poke a small hole toward the back of the spider with an awl so it will hang downward. Thread the balloon’s twine or string through the hole and tie a secure knot. Make sure the knot is tight so the spider won’t slip off.

Release the balloons and let them drift up to the ceiling. Arrange them in clusters or spread them across the room, depending on the impact you want. Suspended spiders create a playful surprise that will catch guests off guard in the best way.

A funny (and slightly terrifying) moment happened when some of the spiders started falling hours later, dropping like real spiders. We all jumped—there may have been a scream or two and a barking dog. The unexpected motion makes this decoration especially effective. I’d love to try a spider-balloon drop somewhere for a dramatic prank or party moment. How fun would that be?
