For our final summer project with True Value, we transformed a plain mailbox with bold stripes. True Value offers sturdy, simple mailboxes and a lively selection of EasyCare exterior paints, and I loved mixing several bright shades for this makeover.
I’m thrilled with the result — this mailbox is a fun, unmistakable landmark for visitors. No party balloons required: just tell people to look for the colorful mailbox!

DIY Striped Mailbox Makeover
Total Time: 2 Hours (plus drying time)
Supplies
Mailbox
House numbers (available at hardware stores)
Primer (exterior primer/sealer)
Exterior EasyCare paint in several bright colors (used: Bright Blossom, Heroic, Irish Rose, Sherbert, Sky Blue, Glam Goddess)
Painter’s tape
1.5″ paint brush
E6000 glue (or a strong outdoor adhesive)
Toothpick
Directions
1. Apply a thin, even coat of primer to the entire mailbox and to the house numbers. Allow everything to dry completely before continuing.
2. Use painter’s tape to mark diagonal stripes across the mailbox. Aim for roughly 4″–5″ spacing, or vary the spacing and tape width for a custom look. Press the tape edges firmly so paint won’t bleed underneath.
3. Paint each taped section a different color. Allow the first coat to dry 30–60 minutes and add a second coat if needed. After a full dry period of about an hour, carefully remove the tape to reveal crisp stripes.
4. Paint the front, back and flag of the mailbox in contrasting colors to the stripes. Paint the house numbers in a shade that stands out against the mailbox finish so they remain easy to read. Allow all painted surfaces to dry completely and apply additional coats where necessary.
5. When the paint is fully dry, attach the house numbers. Lay the mailbox on its side and use a toothpick to apply a thin bead of E6000 glue to the back edge of each number.
6. Press each number in place and hold for about 30 seconds. Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions before installing the mailbox outdoors.

Now I just need a house to match — preferably one on “Candy Lane”! Minor details, right?
Thanks for following our colorful summer projects. This project was created in collaboration with True Value.
