55 Free Crochet Basket Patterns

Crochet baskets are easy and fun projects to make, great for storage in the home or to give as (or with) a gift.

This collection of crochet basket patterns includes circular and rectangular options, soft and sturdy, small and large, and simple and embellished baskets. And if you’ve never made a basket before we’ll cover all the basics to get you started.

Why Crochet a Basket?

There are lots of reasons you might want to crochet a basket for your home.

First, they’re a great way to show off your crochet skills in a way that is useful for the home. You can use crochet baskets for storing everything from your keys to extra yarn and current crochet projects.

Baskets become part of your home decor and are a great way to add a splash of color and texture to a room. You can also make baskets that serve as holders for plants, that hang on the wall, or that become part of your decor for holidays.

How to Crochet a Basket

Baskets are generally suitable for beginning crocheters as long as you are comfortable working in rounds. They usually use basic stitches, and round or oval baskets will have increases to shape the bottom.

You can find basket patterns that are squares or rectangles as well as circles, ovals, and other shapes. Most basket patterns start with the base. For circles and ovals you’ll start at the center of the base and work out, while square and rectangular baskets are worked from one side of the base across. Squares can also be worked from the center as a granny square would be.

Once the base is the size you want or that the pattern calls for, you’ll start working around the sides of the base to make the sides of the basket your required length.

Handles can be worked as part of the basket or stitched on later, or you can use leather, rope or other materials for handles.

How Do You Crochet a Sturdy Basket?

For a crochet basket to be useful, it must be sturdy. If the sides don’t stand up on their own the basket won’t look as nice as it could. Here are some tips to help you make baskets that look their best.

  • Heavier-weight yarns such as (5) bulky, (6) super bulky, and (7) jumbo are sturdier than lighter weight yarns. You can also hold two strands together to make your stitches thicker.
  • Using a smaller crochet hook than the yarn would usually call for will make your stitches tighter and your basket sturdier.
  • Use tight stitches like single crochet (sc) and half double crochet (hdc). These stitches are short and relatively solid, which will help your basket stand on its own.
  • Add plastic canvas or cardboard to the base and/or the sides of the basic to make it sturdier.
  • Instead of crocheting a base for your basket, you can buy a basket base and crochet onto that. These bases are commonly made of wood or leather and come in various shapes to suit your project.
  • Crochet over rope or wire to make your basket sturdier. This video tutorial by Kathy Lashly shows you how.

Materials and Supplies Needed to Crochet Baskets

Yarn

You can use any kind of yarn you like for your crocheted basket, but cotton yarns, T-shirt yarns, and macrame-style yarns are great options. Here are a few yarns we like to use in crochet basket patterns:

You can use whatever yarn the pattern calls for or head to your yarn stash to find a suitable yarn. Baskets are also a great way to use odd balls and leftovers from other projects.

Tools and Notions

  • Crochet hook in the size called for in the pattern, or a size or two smaller than the yarn would typically require
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers for working in rounds
  • Measuring tape
  • Yarn needle
  • Other supplies as needed such as handles, plastic canvas, sewing supplies, etc.
